My whole approach to teaching can be summed up by a quote from Albert Einstein: "Imagination is More Important than Knowledge." I teach for long-term retention of concepts - not short term retention of facts. In today's connected world, the facts are at our fingertips. It's what we know how to do with those facts that matters! My tutoring sessions focus on problem-solving skills and interpretation of scientific evidence. It's what we know how to do with those facts that matters! My tutoring sessions focus on problem-solving skills and interpretation of scientific evidence. Along the way, if needed, I'll also share tips and tricks for memorizing those things your teacher or professor expects you to memorize.

One of my specialties is helping students visualize complex concepts using animations and videos available online. There's so much out there, it's hard to find the good stuff that will meet *your* learning needs. My job is to show you those tools and integrate them into your other course materials.

Math is an essential component of lots of other courses, and it can be a stumbling block to success in those courses. When I'm teaching chemistry, much of the time I'm also teaching essential pre-algebra and algebra skills. "Word problems" are no problem because that's my specialty: "translating" a chemistry or biology question into the numbers and symbols needed to write an equation and solve a problem.

My years of experience teaching and tutoring chemistry at all levels will help me meet you where you are and take you where you want to be! I teach at the college level but have tutored many high school students. When I wasn't teaching, I worked for a software company to develop online AP Chemistry and AP Biology courses. Organic Chemistry is one of my favorite subjects to tutor, because I really love helping students get beyond memorizing, to deep understanding.

My chemistry and biochemistry degrees include coursework in physics and biology, and I've always been fascinated by astronomy and geology. My years of experience working with students who struggle with math comes down to one word: listen. I don't talk at students, I listen to them "think out loud" as they explain how they approach a problem. It's by listening that I can really understand where a student needs help, then present the student with similar problems as we work through that challenge.

Most of what is taught in this course has application in science - lot of functions, graphing, and polynomial equations. I use this math all the time with my chemistry students. This makes me especially good at the word problems you find in Algebra II.

I've been teaching chemistry to students of all ages for years. At the high school level, I've tutored in regular (basic) courses, honors courses, and Advanced Placement chemistry for students at a range of public and private high schools. At the college level, I have years of experience teaching and tutoring college chemistry courses for science majors. My focus is on conceptual thinking, not memorizing. With a subject as cumulative as chemistry, my approach to tutoring and teaching is to help students "connect the dots" - what does this chapter have to do with the one we just finished, and how will what I learn now be important as I move on?

Long-term success in math (and in subjects that use math, like chemistry or physics) depends on a solid foundation of the basic properties of numbers and variables. My focus in pre-algebra tutoring is to make sure a student masters the fundamentals and has the confidence to use them in all sorts of situations. I have experience working with math learners of all ages - middle school through middle age. I especially enjoy helping college students - or prospective college students - dust off their math knowledge in order to score well on college placement exams.

My background as a faculty member at liberal arts colleges includes teaching writing and reading across the curriculum. In addition to helping you with key math concepts on the PSAT, I'm also an accomplished writer and teacher of writing. To help you prepare for success on this test - and pave the way for National Merit scholarship funds, I'll help you master some of the fine points of grammar and sentence structure. Critical reading is also an essential skill on this test - my experience teaching first-year seminars at the college level gives me a wealth of interesting material to pick from to help you learn to read critically in many different subject areas.
