I'm Jamie. In college, I realized that I had a passion for language and earned my Bachelor's degree in Spanish with a minor in French. I continued learning about language in graduate school, where I received a Master's degree in linguistics and TESOL. My desire to learn about languages easily translated into a desire to teach them. I began tutoring Spanish to high school and college students in 2014 and teaching ESL in 2016. I have taught ESL in language schools in both the United States and abroad, improving my teaching skills through a wide range of students and contexts.
What I love most about language teaching is helping students expand their knowledge and experiences. Language learning accesses a different part of the brain than most traditional topics, and learning about other cultures allows us to gain a more global perspective of the world around us.
In my lessons, I always focus on understanding the "why" of things. Memorizing isn't the same as learning; I want to help my students truly grasp the concepts and the reasons behind something so that they can apply that knowledge to other contexts. The most rewarding moments are when a student is presented with an unfamiliar situation and can deduce the answer by processing what is in front of them.
In my 8 years of teaching experience, I have gained knowledge in teaching all skill areas, specifically grammar, writing, conversation, pronunciation, and TOEFL preparation. I take the time to understand my students' needs, skills, and goals, and I craft lessons specific to each student. I make sure to spend time reviewing concepts, practicing, and evaluating what has been learned.
Feel free to send me a message if you have any questions or are interested in scheduling a lesson. I would love the opportunity to work with you!
