ADHD

I have a background in Resource and Inclusion classrooms with students in the Gwinnett County, Georgia School System. When tutoring your child, first I would assess and see which characteristics of ADHD your child exhibits. This will be help me a develop a plan of action. Behavior Therapy is a #1 priority. I will discuss these with you personally.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

My background includes working with students with Moderate to High Functioning Autism. We concentrate on study and organizational skills. We also work on time management skills. The goal is to learn how to organize and prioritize his daily tasks. We review time management skills. We implement the use of an agenda and a timer to help reinforce the plan we develop. Once finalized the expectations are set and rewards are given based on goals achieved.

Elementary (K-6th)

Areas covered in Elementary Subjects: K-8 MATH KINDERGARTEN Focus on representing, relating, and operating on whole numbers and describing shapes and space. Measurement and Data, Counting 1-100. 1ST Opearations and Algebra, Order of Operations, Geometry 2ND Operational Fluency, Geometry and time, multiplication 3RD Data and Statistics, Place value. Fractions, Algebraic Thinking 4TH Whole numbers, patterns and functions, computation 5TH Multiplication/division whole numbers, probablility and stats 6TH Geometry, measurements and data LANGUAGE ARTS KINDERGARTEN Work with the student in targeted areas such as letter sounds, letter identification, and concepts about print, etc. This is achieved through the use of songs, poems, books, finger plays and writing activities. This language rich environment is designed to develop early reading and writing behaviors. The student learns to value language and to develop confidence in his/her abilities to utilize different forms. 1ST Learn familiar sight words and common symbol relationships (phonics) in the context of meaningful application. Work on skills needed for formation of manuscript letters and numerals. 2ND Reading strategies taught. Writing experiences introduced. 3RD Cursive handwriting, comphrehension skills developed through exposure to a variety of print. 4TH Expose students to variety of reading materisls including fiction, plays poetry and nonficiton. Work further on reading strategies. 5th Vocabulary expanded through exposure to a variety of texts. Develop a conceptual understanding of new words. 6th Use strategies to prepare for reading, use strategies to make meaning from text, use strategies to demonstrate understanding of the text. Reading

Emphasis on comprehension skills. Reading and re-reading to make sure student understands concepts. Tricks to make sure student picks up clue words in articles.

Social Studies

I have taught Social Studies in Gwinnett Cty, GA grades 6-8. Topics taught are: Industrial Development of the US (1870-1900), Emergence of Modern America (1890-1930), The Great Depression and World War II (1929-1945), Post World War II Era (1945-1970), The Contemporary US (1968-present).

Special Needs

My background includes working with students with Aspergers and Moderate to High Functioning Autism in Elementary, Middle and High Schools in Atlanta. I work with the students on study and organizational skills. I teach them different skills to help them organize and prioritize their daily tasks. As a group the student, parents and I all review the student's IEP with the student to make sure the plan is being followed. This includes making sure specific testing strategies and allowances (extra time, small group testing) are being provided for inclusion students. To help with all correspondence and organization, some type of agenda is used. Students record all class information (homework, quizzes, tests, projects) in the agenda. Teachers initial it everyday at the end of each subject, short comments can be noted by the teacher. Parents initial every night and make any notes needed. Students are held accountable for this. A reward system is set up for completion of this. Time management is the other major area we will work on. I use timers are used for transition into new tasks. This is a great tool to use in implementing a time management plan. The goal is to make the student more academically independent. By teaching them time management, organizational and study skills they will be better equipped to succeed in their courses.

Spelling

Spelling grades can improve by daily review of words. I use at least three different approaches to help a student improve their spelling skills. Students usually have a packet of words each week. Their tasks are broken down into daily skills. Students will keep a separate Spelling noted book. First the student will look up the definition of each word and write it in his notebook. He will come up with some type of word association. At this time, he will pick out any words he thinks are difficult. The next day, the student will write each word down ten times. This will reinforce the correct spelling of the word. On the third day, the student will have someone ask him to spell the words out loud. Any word that is missed, the student is asked to write it down ten times and them asked to have the words that were missed asked again. On the final day, the student is given a pre-test to make sure they are ready for the test.

Study Skills

I have experience teaching a Study Skills Class for Middle School Students at Crews Middle School, Gwinnett County Georgia. Students in class were taught Time Management, Organizational, and Study Skills.

Swimming

I swam competitively from ages 6-16 and taught swim lessons from ages 16-21. I prefer to teach individuals rather than group lessons.

Tennis

I have been a Tennis Coach and Instructor for USTA and ALTA teams in Atlanta for the past 14 years. I can tutor tennis for beginners and intermediate players. Group and individual lessons. Ages 5-10.

Vocabulary

Work with students to increase their vocabulary with various programs. Use of games helps student learn without even realizing it!

Writing

Writing ability improves in stages; however, the following items should be watched: incorrect grammar and spelling, poorly structured essays and unsupported ideas. I work with students on these common problems and others that occur in their writing.
