I have a professional degree as a children and family therapist and during the past 20 years have worked with children and their families as a school based consultant, play therapist and family therapist within a clinic and home settings. This enables me to easily work with students who may have various special needs in addition to reading services. I have been tutoring individuals for 10 years using a specialized reading and comprehension program on a one on one basis. Initially, I assess to determine a person's strengths and challenges with phoneme awareness, symbol imagery and their ability to comprehend depth and meaning. Often, reading programs only focus on fluency of reading but someone may have a gap in decoding, imagery, comprehension or all of them together. The reading services I provide will address any single or combination of those needs. Additionally, I may help them with their creative expression in writing and speaking. Good writing begins with creative expression and the fluidity of those creative ideas. Most of the students that I have worked with have dyslexia and/or dysgraphia, reading comprehension and creative expression needs . When working with children, I find it beneficial to also spend time teaching the parents, if desired, strategies they can use to strengthen the work and help implement the skills into all the areas of their children's lives. I also enjoy working with homeschool students in multiple subjects and have homeschooled my son for 11 years. I am patient and encouraging and will look for a student's strengths to help them overcome any challenges.
I will provide a general assessment of the students skills and collaborate together with the student and parents to develop a plan. Periodic evaluations will be done to provide feedback and help the family determine their tutoring needs. It is my goal to help all students see themselves as having advantages and strengths and we will work together to help them reshape any challenges into a skill they can accomplish. Working with children is my first love (though I enjoy working with adults as well) . I look forward to working with you, your child and your family.

We had a great first session with Jill. I am looking forward to having my son work with Jill to move him forward with some reading gaps.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
