Bio

As a self-proclaimed lifelong learner and trivia enthusiast, I have always had a passion for knowledge and learning. My goal as a tutor has always been to make the experience of learning as fascinating and enjoyable as possible for my students. I have been tutoring in some way, shape or form since 2007, when I taught French and chess to middle school students. Since then, I have tutored a variety of subjects, ranging from Math at the high school level to US History to chess.

I have been tutoring in some way, shape or form since 2007, when I taught French and chess to middle school students. Since then, I have tutored a variety of subjects, ranging from Math at the high school level to US History to chess.

Born and raised in the suburbs of Sacramento, CA, I obtained a Bachelors in Mathematics from CSU Sacramento, and began working as a marketing and outreach contractor for National Academic Quiz Tournaments, an academic competition organization. I am also the vice president of Northern California Quiz Bowl Alliance.

As a chess aficionado myself, I love helping new players learn more about the game and strategies for how to improve. I have been playing chess since 2004, and I am currently a National Master with a rating of 2265. Not only have I tutored chess to a variety of students at different levels, I have also taken chess lessons myself, so I am familiar with the best techniques for understanding and explaining chess.

I won the Northern California Scholastic High School Championship Tournament in 2011 and attained the level of National Master in 2012. In addition, I ran the chess club at UC Berkeley and won the Sacramento Blitz Championship Tournament six consecutive years.

9th Grade Algebra I

We were very pleased with our granddaughter’s first tutoring session for Algebra 1. Nicholas her tutor was very knowledgeable and clearly comfortable with the subject matter and the skills she was working to develop. What stood out most to us was his approach to teaching. When she gave an answer, he didn’t simply tell her that it was “right” or “wrong.” Instead, he encouraged her to think through her response by asking questions such as, “Okay, how else could you respond to that?” This helped her look at the problem from another perspective and understand the reasoning behind the answer. Nicholas was patient, encouraging, and focused on helping her understand the material rather than simply getting the correct answer. We really appreciated his teaching style and look forward to seeing her continue to build confidence and strengthen her Algebra 1 skills. Thanks Nicholas, we are looking forward to our next session with you.
