About Bruce

Bio

Recently I have been in graduate school and/or teaching at Clark Atlanta University and the University of Florida. During this time I have tutored, TA-ed, and have been an instructor and adjunct lecturer. Most of my experience has been teaching mathematics to college students. However I have taught English as a second language, GED classes for all 4 of the subjects, ACT/SAT prep to students of all ages and backgrounds, in a variety of environments. Recently I have been in graduate school and/or teaching at Clark Atlanta University and the University of Florida. During this time I have tutored, TA-ed, and have been an instructor and adjunct lecturer. Most of my experience has been teaching mathematics to college students. However I have taught English as a second language, GED classes for all 4 of the subjects, ACT/SAT prep to students of all ages and backgrounds, in a variety of environments. I have tutored mathematics for the past 10+ years in some capacity.

Throughout middle and high school I competed in math competitions and was the highest and most awarded student for my grade level in my district. I also have attained extremely high scores on the PSAT, SAT, ACT, and the GRE, scoring above the 80th percentile in each section, each time I took them. I hold a Master of Science in Mathematics (2018) from the University of Florida.

I am currently concentrating on making educational materials for upper level undergraduate courses and lower level graduate courses.

My teaching philosophy is to expose the student to ideas and concepts, giving them the guidance, tools and strategies to successfully analyze and solve novel problems. This equips more advanced students better than just repeating the same task over and over, though at time that is necessary. This process can sometimes be slow but the results are worth it. I strive to develop conceptual thinking and interest in mathematics with the student, revealing the connections within mathematics and between math and other subjects. My end goal is for the student to truly understand the material so that they are comfortable with it, experience the creativity of mathematics, and can make use of the concepts in the manner that they are acquiring the tutoring services for.

I competed on math teams in middle school and high school and won many awards. The types of problems were logical reasoning word problems that involved more knowledge than just standard numbers and equations. Similar in many ways to the problems encountered in elementary mathematics. I have also extensively taught PreCalculus and Trigonometry in that time. Often times I find that students do not have a problem understanding the Calculus concepts, but some of the underlying math needs shoring up and I can assist with that too. I also make sure that while we certainly address the details of problems we do not lose sight of the big picture of the concepts involved in Calculus.

I have taught, tutored and taken many courses involving Dynamical Systems, Number Theory, Set Theory, Logic and Mathematical Reasoning and have mentored students through the transition of focus from calculation based mathematics to proof writing and rational argumentation. I have a few courses designed to for intro to proof writing for student's that are at different levels in their mathematical maturity. I intend to publish some work on Discrete Math in the coming months.

Finite Mathematics is a broad catch all term used to distinguish from continuous processes found in Calculus. I have experience in many things finite, elementary things such as Set Theory, Binomial Probability and Finite Probability spaces, to more advanced subjects such as Finite Group and Field Theory.

I have tutored, mentored and coached students through the transition into proof writing courses. I concentrate on developing their skills in interpretation of quantifiers, definitions, logical implications/propositions and their proper equivalences and negations. We discuss truth tables, Boolean Algebra, Set Theory and Number Theory to give an appropriate introduction and arena to practice logical/mathematical reasoning and rational argumentation.

I have also taught Calculus 1 and 2 which uses Trigonometry extensively. This gives me the knowledge to know what has been taught to students before their Trigonometry class and how Trigonometry is used in future classes.

Excellent tutor

Our mentoring group has 6 students at University of Florida and 1 at FSU. Bruce makes himself available to all of them either in person, laptop, phone or text. He handles all forms of math including pre-calc, trig, calc and stats. We highly recommend him.
