Bio

I am a medical student and classically trained pianist with a passion for teaching science and music. Additionally, I have a MS in Biomedical science with a focus on Neuroscience; specifically on the primary effects of chronic neural inflammation in driving neurodegenerative diseases, and the protective cognitive effects of art and music on the brain. My personal journey to this point has involved various opportunities to combine science and music both in research and in practice; and has led me to adopt a holistic approach in teaching music and science that emphasizes the connection between theory and the art of practice.

My teaching philosophy regarding science is to understand the foundational concepts rather than memorizing facts. This approach has proven to be highly successful with my students throughout college and graduate school, and may continue to do so for any future students I tutor.
My approach towards music focuses on the importance of musicality and interpretation, as well as harnessing the body's anatomy and natural range of motion and balance to refine piano techniques so as to play fluidly and with ease.

I hope these approaches are as appealing to potential students as they have proven to be successful, and I sincerely look forward to guiding students through them!

Thank you, and please feel free to contact me with questions!

Anatomy

Anatomy

I am a medical student and have spent 2 years TAing for the anatomy class with the medical students. I specialize in neuroanatomy, but I am fully capable of teaching various other systems. I approach anatomy from a functional, and developmental perspective to demonstrate how and why structures are connected the way they are
Biochemistry

Biochemistry

Biochemistry is a fun subject for me to teach because it bridges the concepts of organic chemistry with the basic biological processes that sustain and characterize life. I have found that focusing on the thermodynamical factors and selective evolutional processes that influence these processes has been helpful in explaining these concepts to students. Additionally, I find it useful to explain the biological correlates of the terms used in the various equations used in biochemistry, thus making them less confusing and easier to grasp on a biological level.
Biology

Biology

Biology is a highly diverse topic that can be overwhelming for new students and even people with a baseline knowledge of the field. However, I have developed a system that emphasizes understanding of the mechanism of biological processes and their underlying factors as a means of learning, as opposed to just memorizing. This approach has helped to reinforce these concepts while focusing on the foundational topics.
Composition (Music)

Composition (Music)

During high school, I attended the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where I began to refine my skills in Piano, Chamber Music, and Orchestral writing. I continued this focus at Morehouse College, where I majored in Music Composition and held highly successful Composition and Piano recitals in my senior year. My composition output includes several short piano works, string quartets, a piano quintet, and large-scale works for piano and orchestra
Music Theory

Music Theory

I studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and later received a B.A in Music from Morehouse College. I have tutored music theory, piano, and composition to several students from different education levels and across several genres and historical period. My approach is more theoretical, leaving the musicality to the student
Physiology

Physiology

Physiology has always been an essential part of my medical education and has required a lot of effort on my part to fully appreciate its concepts. I studied Music/Pre-Medicine in college, where I worked in a Neuroscience lab in understanding neuroinflammatory processes; and later obtained a M.S in Biomedical Sciences in the study of neurodegenerative diseases. Medical school has further expanded this knowledge to include the myriad of processes that go awry in diseases, their physical and subjective manifestations, and potential targets for care and therapy.
Piano

Piano

I began my first piano and music lessons at age 8, and attended the San Francisco Conservatory of Music during high school. Afterwards, I majored in Music/Pre-medicine at Morehouse College, where I obtained a degree in Music Composition with a focus on piano. Additionally, I won the Heffner Annual HBCU piano competition in April 2014. My piano repertoire is vast, ranging from Baroque to 21st century music, as well as Gospel and R&B.
