Georgia State University (Math)
My love of math began in middle school after I realized how beautiful it is and how it is applied to everyday life. That love of math influenced my decision to major and graduated with a B.S. in Mathematics from Georgia State University. I began volunteering as a tutor between 2006 and 2009 in mathematics from elementary to College Algebra and started again in 2012, the same year I joined WyzAnt.
It gives me a great feeling seeing students "light up" after understanding the concept and gaining confidence. When solving math problems there's more than one way to come to a solution. My goal is helping people remove their fears in math. The best way to retain information that is taught is by teaching others and practicing. Students will first try problems themselves so it helps to see where they are truly having problems, and boost their confidence at the same time. Patience, determination, and hard work generate positive results. If you want a tutor who is willing to go the extra mile for you then look no further.
I greatly look forward to working with you.

Telisha was able to help me get a visual understanding of Algebra 2. She took the time to explain problems in detail and helped me gain a new found confidence as I move forward with my studies.
I'm so glad to help and also help gain your confidence!
My daughter is happy, I'm happy, what else matters!
I scheduled weekly sessions! Thanks so much Telisha. See you next week!
Telisha was great. She explained things in a way that made it easy for me to understand. She was patient and didn't get frustrated when I didn't understand something! I will use her again if ever needed! She helped me pass both my math classes!!
Thank you Demica. It also has been a pleasurable experience working with you as well! Having plenty of patience is what it's all about, along with good communication. I'm so proud of you and wish you much success in your future endeavors. You made my job easier and worthwhile.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Algebra 1 is a building block from elementary math and prealgebra combined. Students will see real-world connections using algebra with areas in finance, calculating distances, construction, and many more while using variables, equations, and graphs to find out.
Algebra 2 is a continuation of algebra 1. Usually taken after geometry or together. It goes a bit more in depth in learning equations and functions and introduce more challenging subjects such as exponential and logarithmic functions, quadratic functions, rational equations and functions, and matrices and determinants.
This is the subject where most students learn basic arithmetic such as the four basic operations and its applications. Students also learn to count money, telling time, identify graphs and shapes, basic problem solving, and measurements.
My tutoring approach would be a combination of visual, verbal, and hands-on learning depending on the learning style of the student. Per the request of the student/or parents additional worksheets could be provided at no charge.
Science was my second favorite subject in school overall. I enjoyed learning about atoms and molecules, the functions of the human body such as the digestive, respiratory, circulatory, and skeletal systems. Science is also a cool way to explain the forces of nature and their causes.
English is complementary to Grammar as these tools are both needed in writing.
For English and Grammar subjects it is highly important to learn vocabulary because students must be able to learn prefixes and suffixes, verb tense, articles ( a, an, or the), and many more.
I will proofread English papers from K through high school.
GED lessons will given in two phases. The first phase will be reviewing concepts from the exam and specifically in math the basic concepts will be introduced as well as practicing more advanced problems. The second phase will be reviewing the actual problems from the practice test and provide the best test-taking strategies.
Geometry is about shapes and their properties.
Level of expertise: I am very comfortable in tutoring basic/elementary geometry to most high school levels. I will be a limited help in writing geometric proofs for I will have to refer to additional sources. Writing proofs can be tricky and it requires familiarity with multiple theorems to provide a single proof.
Grammar is a structural set of rules of how words are used in a language.
In my experience I have seen papers containing words that sound alike but used inappropriately in a sentence, for example, whether vs. weather. One of the words talks about temperature and other conditions, and the other word is define as one or the other.
In this lesson students will identify common grammatical mistakes such as subject-verb disagreements, parts of a speech- nouns, pronouns, adjectives, etc., frequently misspelled words, and punctuation.
During my collegiate career as a math major undergrad, I've taken upper-level math courses including Linear Algebra. I've participated in group study sessions as well as independent studies and had to devote at least 30-35 hours/week of studying. While I was taking the second course of Linear Algebra, I used MATLAB software as a class project to solve complex matrices and determinant systems as well as solving for eigenvectors/values. I would love the opportunity to tutor this subject because I've mastered it, can teach students how to study for this course, and it is a fun course overall.
My exposure to Logic came while taking my first abstract math course. I've learned to use truth tables and understood conditional and bi-conditional statements. Using Boolean logic is my favorite type of logic areas.
This was the subject that jump started my passion for math.
Prealgebra is just like a follow-up from elementary math course. The subject includes introduction to integers, order of operations, writing algebraic expressions, equations, fractions, decimals, percentages, proportions, inequalities, and more properties.
My teaching style would be a combination of visual, verbal, and hands-on depending on the learning style of the student. Per the request of students or parents additional worksheets could be provided at no charge.
I'm an excellent speller. In grade school my teachers would give a list of spelling words to study on an weekly basis and were given a quiz the following day. On my quizzes/tests I made all A's and my strategies were to use letters as objects/things/and names (for example, s as in Sam) or I would learn how to spell words by some type of rhythm in my head. Some of my classmates knew this skill of mine and asked me to spell words for them and even today with some of my peers and family.
Trigonometry is branch of mathematics that studies triangles and their relationships between their sides and angles. Trigonometric functions are most simply defined using the unit circle. This topic will include angle measures, pythagorean theorem, trig functions- the magic identity, the addition formulas, double-angle and half-angle formulas, and product and sum formulas, trig equations, hyperbolic trig, and many more.
