I have taught college-level English full time for four years, and then moved into managing first a writing center, and then academic resources at an art and design university. As a writing tutor, I worked one on one with undergrad and grad students on writing assignments and professional documents (resumes and cover letters, scholarship essays, etc.). In addition to this, I am a published roleplaying game designer and editor, and have 5 years corporate communications experience working with clients including IBM, Walmart, Home Depot, and Bank of America.

With the arrival of AI, the idea of writing as just the final product minimizes the worth of the process. Anyone who has kept a blog or a diary can tell you that the act of writing helps you to think things through. You can't edit a blank page, and you can't refine a thought that hasn't crystalized into words yet. I have MAs in both English Literature and Professional Writing, and I'm a PhD student in Rhetoric and Composition. I have worked as an English instructor and writing tutor for 18 years, and I love helping students learn how to untangle the ideas in their head and organize them in a way that will connect with others.

I have taught First Year Composition at the college level for seven years, followed by seven years managing a university writing and tutoring center. I've recently completed my PhD coursework and am working on my dissertation on visual and material rhetorics' impact on immersion and storytelling. If the "point" of writing was just to produce a document, AI would be a great solution. But the writing assigned as part of a class is "writing to learn" as well as "learning to write". Use writing as a technology for learning, to make connections and express insights, and you will get much more than a good grade: you will learn how to learn in any situation and any subject.

In addition to 7 years teaching college English composition, literature, and research, I supervised writing and tutoring centers for 10 years. But most importantly for this subject, I have been a working professional freelance editor for over 20 years. I explain grammar in terms of breaking sentences down into chunks, and seeing how the chunks fit together. No jargon, no split infinitives or pluperfect gobbledegook!

While my specialization at the MA level was Renaissance Drama, I have taught American and British literature from 1800 to the present. My deepest subject knowledge is in poetry and drama, with an additional focus in genre fiction (horror, sci-fi, fantasy, graphic novels). I am a big believer in learning the historical and cultural context of literature, and showing students how to look at how the text reflects the larger society that created it.

In addition to using Word and GoogleDocs throughout my entire professional life, I spent 5 years as a document specialist, creating extremely complex files using many of the more obscure tools (styles, pagination, numbering, etc.). I have hacks for making sure your page numbers start in the right place, your footnotes line up with the sentences they refer to, and your spacing between paragraphs is consistent and even. Let me show you how to use Word's built-in functions to make your documents look polished and professional!

For the last 10 years, I have advised MA and MFA students working on their final thesis, process book, or project. Drawing on my Master's degree in professional writing, seven years as a First Year Composition instructor and 10 years of training graduate students and professional consultants to assist graduate students with their writing, I have successfully coached hundreds of MA and MFA students to successfully complete their thesis. I am experienced with APA, MLA, and Chicago style citations, as well as source management applications like Zotero. Additionally, I have taught workshops on graduate level research, with a focus on survey methodology and literature reviews. I look forward to helping coach you to a successful thesis or dissertation and defense!

My yoga journey began in 1999. I earned my YTT (yoga teacher training) certification in 2021, and began teaching in 2025. I have additional advanced certifications in Yin Yoga and Yoga Nidra, and teach a weekly class on Yin and Restorative Yoga.
