My experience with teaching ranges from all grades as a substitute for 2-3 years and middle school math as a Math Teacher in Dekalb County (1 year). At Salem Middle School, I was part of a co-teacher teaching environment, which requires data-driven differentiation of lesson planning and accommodation of teaching methods. I utilized technology, manipulatives, handouts, dual-teaching, small groups, slideshows, educational videos, and other methods to share information. As a tutor (3-4 years) I worked primarily with middle school ages, with two summer sessions as a high school tutor, working with students in Algebra I & II and some Pre-Calculus.
I have worked in education for ten years, as a College Adviser, Career Coach, Substitute Teacher, Tutor, and most recently a Math Teacher in Dekalb County School District. I have always looked to provide hands-on guidance to solutions that I felt may have been lacking in my educational pursuits. Recognizing that with all the distractions students were born with, the time and methods in the schools may not be sufficient enough to grasp the material. Providing real-world context, and recognizing the relevance of mathematical techniques in your daily thinking has played a crucial role in helping students make the connection and enhance their learning.
At the University of Virginia, a critical skill I gained was the ability to gain knowledge from any interaction or experience. Listening to the needs and expectations of students, parents, and other stakeholders in the students’ education is crucial for effective tutoring. During the pursuit of my Master’s at Mary Baldwin University, I honed crucial leadership skills to recognize trends in learning and assess whether there are better methods to consider and strategize how to implement them effectively. Being able to determine what does and does not work for an individual student can make or break the learning journey, which I strive to identify those best practices as a tutor.
