Hello, my name is Dan. I have a PhD in medieval intellectual history and experience teaching, mentoring, research, editing, and writing in both academic and professional settings. I am the author of a forthcoming scholarly monograph with Routledge, have worked in an editorial role for a premier peer reviewed academic journal, and taught writing for many years in the University of Chicago's Humanities Core program. My strongest tutoring areas are writing (academic and professional), history, philosophy and religious studies, and close reading.
Education is always directed towards some end, and my goal as a tutor is to help students chart and follow a course towards that end. I can't walk it for them, but I can help them find their way. Therefore, my tutoring approach is fundamentally practical and collaborative. I help students understand not just what needs to be improved, but why, which with writing usually means working through the assignment, clarifying the main argument, strengthening organization and evidence, and revising sentences so they can articulate themselves clearly and concisely. I don't rewrite papers for students. Instead, I help them see how to make better choices as writers, so they can become better readers and better thinkers.
I work with high school, college, and adult learners on essays, research papers, reading comprehension, and writing-intensive work, whether that's planning an essay, revising a draft, understanding a difficult text, or developing stronger academic writing habits. My goal always is to make work clearer, less overwhelming, and more useful for the student. I am happy to adapt sessions based on the student’s assignment, course level, goals, and learning style.
