SO MUCH MATH TO LOVE OR DREAD
I love math, but many students do not. It's frustrating to be in classes moving too fast or too slow. Whether your child is a math enthusiast, struggling to keep up, or somewhere in between, I have seen the surprise and pride of a child who begins to grasp something that initially looked daunting. I have enjoyed working with hundreds of elementary and middle school students with targeted lessons, homework, and test preparation.

CURRICULUM
Along with public, private, and charter school curricula, I am continually learning and researching math curricula and teaching methods through conferences, online resources, and following educational influencers.

ONE ANSWER, BUT MORE THAN ONE APPROACH TO SOLVE

How do you solve 18 x 3?

Do you solve it from memory? Vertical multiplication? Or do you rearrange the numbers to be more friendly?

Since 18 = 10 + 8, you could rewrite it as: (10 x 3) + (8 x 3) = 30 + 24 = 54

Or since 18 = 20 - 2, how about: (20 x 3) - (2 x 3) = 60 - 6 = 54?

Do you see other ways?

SERIOUS AND PLAYFUL
A worksheet filled with words and numbers looks unappealing, and many kids think it is hard because the page is too busy. My goal is to teach beyond the school assignment with the student's interests in mind and include fun and whimsy. I may ask a 5th grader invited to a soccer tournament in another time zone to calculate departure and arrival times of the trip based on miles, average speed, and time zone changes.

FROM 1-2-3 to SAT
My focus is on foundational math using multisensory manipulatives and with an eye on higher grades and testing. Becoming fluent in numbers, operations, factors, fractions, place value with strategies targeted towards the student's learning style prepares them for the more complex and abstract math beyond elementary school.

I would love to meet with you and your elementary or middle school student to discuss your needs and goals. With the right support, math frustrations can turn into math confidence.
