Hi! I am Mugdha. I hold a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering with 3 years of Math tutoring experience and 15 years of industry experience as an automotive design engineer at Cummins Inc. Since school days, Math has always been my favorite subject. Blessed with great teachers throughout my education, I developed strong fundamentals. This foundation is the primary reason I decided to pursue tutoring after leaving my full-time job.
For the past three years, I have tutored late elementary and middle school (Gr. 3 to 8) students both in-person and online in Math, Pre-Algebra, and Algebra. I have also coached students for math competitions i.e. Kangaroo Math, Noetic Math, and Math Olympiad. Understanding student needs and adapting my teaching style, catering to their strengths while addressing their weaknesses, is the core of my tutoring methodology. While tutoring a Grade 6 Advanced Math student in person, I noticed he preferred solving problems mentally. Recognizing this as a strength, I encouraged him to keep doing mental calculations while teaching him to jot down key steps to verify his answers. I also taught him mental math shortcuts and tricks to verify his work faster.
Whenever possible, I pair standard practice problems with hands-on, activity-based learning to show students the real-world applications of math. For instance, for Gr. 4 students, I give assignments to participate in grocery shopping, list the items and prices to set-up a multi-operation problem or measure items in the household to understand units and unit conversion.
I am a strong advocate of practice. Typically, I work through problems with students during sessions, assign extra practice at home and create simulated practice tests before tests. This helps build a deep understanding of math concepts and fosters confidence during exams.
To maximize student success, I start with an initial consultation with students / parents to understand their needs and provide regular updates. Please reach out to schedule a lesson.
