I am a Professor of Music with extensive experience teaching music theory, aural skills, musicianship, and music history at the collegiate level. I hold a Ph.D. in Music Theory, Master of Music degrees in Trombone Performance and Theory, and a Master of Education. I have worked with students ranging from middle and high school musicians to undergraduate and graduate music majors. In addition to my university teaching, I have maintained a private teaching studio and have significant experience working one-on-one with students to help them develop confidence and mastery in music theory and musicianship.

My teaching background includes classroom instruction, individual tutoring, assessment, and curriculum development. I have served as an AP Music Theory Reader, giving me valuable insight into the expectations and scoring standards of the AP Music Theory Exam. I have also helped students prepare for college music theory courses, placement examinations, aural skills assessments, and Royal Conservatory of Music theory examinations, and college of Examiners with the Thailand International Music Examination (TIME). My approach emphasizes clear explanations, guided practice, and helping students understand not only how a concept works but why it matters musically.

I believe successful tutoring combines expertise, patience, and encouragement. Every student learns differently, so I adapt my instruction to individual goals and learning styles. Whether a student is preparing for AP Music Theory, strengthening ear training and sight singing skills, working through a college theory course, or pursuing personal musical interests, I strive to create an engaging and supportive learning environment that promotes long-term understanding and confidence. My goal is to help students develop strong analytical and listening skills while enjoying the process of becoming more knowledgeable and capable musicians.

Ear Training

I am a Professor of Music with a Ph.D. in Music Theory and extensive experience teaching ear training and aural skills at the university level. For many years, I have helped students develop skills in melodic dictation, harmonic dictation, sight singing, error detection, and active listening as part of collegiate musicianship curricula. I have worked with high school students, undergraduate music majors, graduate students, and adult learners in both classroom and one-on-one settings. My teaching emphasizes practical listening strategies, pattern recognition, and the connection between what students hear and what they understand theoretically. In addition to my university teaching, I have served as an AP Music Theory Reader and have extensive experience preparing students for AP Music Theory assessments, college placement examinations, and other musicianship evaluations. My goal is to help students become more confident, accurate, and independent listeners and musicians.

I have taught students ranging from non-majors fulfilling general education requirements to undergraduate and graduate music majors. My approach emphasizes listening, critical thinking, historical context, and the connections between composers, styles, and broader cultural developments. In addition to classroom teaching, I have experience mentoring students in research, writing, and analytical skills related to music history. For many years, I have helped students develop fluency in rhythm, solfege, pitch accuracy, interval recognition, and musical interpretation through structured sight-singing instruction. I have worked with high school students preparing for AP Music Theory, undergraduate music majors, graduate students, and adult learners. My teaching emphasizes practical strategies that help students connect notation, audiation, and performance while building confidence in real-time musical reading. As a former AP Music Theory Reader, I understand the expectations associated with sight-singing assessment and musicianship examinations. Whether preparing for AP Music Theory, college coursework, placement exams, or personal musical development, I help students develop the skills necessary to perform unfamiliar melodies accurately and musically.
