Hi! I am a doctorate-trained music educator, composer, and theorist with 35 years of experience studying, teaching, and applying music theory across a wide range of academic and practical settings.
I hold a doctoral degree in Music Composition from Florida State University, a certificate in music theory pedagogy, and a Master's in Piano Performance from Arizona State University. During my graduate studies, I taught Music Theory for Non-Majors, Music Theory I & II, Sight-Singing and Ear Training, as well as all levels of Class Piano, including Keyboard Improvisation.
Currently, I teach class piano and music theory at the high school level and remain actively engaged as a composer, which allows me to teach theory not only as an academic subject, but as a living, practical musical skill.
Having the heart of a teacher, I value every student and aim to provide whatever each person needs to reach their goals. I would characterize my style as enthusiastic, patient, and clear. I enjoy connecting written theory to what you actually hear and play and helping students move from "memorizing rules" to true musical understanding.
Students often come to me feeling overwhelmed or discouraged. My goal is to help you gain confidence, accuracy, and independence whether you're preparing for an exam, catching up in a college sequence, or strengthening your overall musicianship. Feel free to contact me with any questions or to schedule a lesson!
