I graduated summa cum laude from Florida State University with a double major in English Literature and Sociology, and plan to become an English professor. I have 100+ hours of experience tutoring writing, reading comprehension, debate, and ELA to students grades 4-12, and adjust each lesson to the student's specific goals. I competed in Speech and Debate events such as Extemporaneous, Impromptu, Informative, Lincoln-Douglas, Public Forum, Congressional Debate, and World Schools Debate, and continue to judge competitions on a regular basis.

Creative Writing

Creative Writing

I have a masters degree in English from Carnegie Mellon and graduated summa cum laude with BA in English Literature from Florida State. I have formal writing instruction training from both Teach for America and Florida State University, and have worked as a copy writer for a non-profit, and written for two magazines. Since I am a recent student, I understand that oftentimes it's easier to learn reading and writing skills from someone more familiar with the student perspective, which is why I personalize each session to a student's specific needs. We will usually start with a quick writing diagnostic, before moving into specific strategies to improve fluidity and consistency while writing. I love to write analytically and creatively and want others to share that joy also!

Public Speaking

Public Speaking

While debating competitively, I was the captain of Extemporaneous Speaking for my school and was tasked with coaching students during weekly practices. I have taken public speaking courses in college, and have coached and judged tournaments online. I have over eight years of public speaking experience, and also feel comfortable tutoring formal debate styles like Public Forum and Congressional Debate.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

I’ve been tutoring SAT reading and writing for years across different skill levels and grades. I specialize in techniques that help students understand the material quicker and more thoroughly; and enjoy teaching reading comprehension and writing skills. As an English masters student, I am very aware of, and up to date on grammar rules, advanced vocabulary and reading comprehension.

Debate Tutoring

My daughter worked with Heather for her upcoming parliamentary-style debate tournament. She had about four sessions with her. Heather was calm and very thorough in her explanations. She helped my daughter search for her debate topic and make her case stronger
