Hello! I'm Whitney, and I love working with students to achieve their academic goals in reading, writing, research and test prep. I started my career as a high school English teacher after earning a Master's Degree in Teaching English - with an emphasis on writing instruction - from Rollins College. I went on to earn a PhD in Education from Vanderbilt University. I have worked with students of all ages and levels of academic preparation in a wide range of settings, to include home-based and tutoring. My teaching experience includes college level undergraduate courses in Literature, Composition and Vocabulary Development at Montgomery College and graduate courses in Leadership and Policy Studies at Vanderbilt. I hold a Florida teaching certification in English Language Arts. I have tutored off and on throughout my career, to include with WyzAnt while living in Maryland. I have helped many students prepare for the SAT and ACT, develop college entrance essays, earn stellar grades in advanced and AP English Language Arts, and grow confident and proficient in their research and writing skills. I bring subject matter expertise plus a focus on building authentic rapport and consistent, manageable routines that allow students to envision their goals, manage their time, and feel supported every step of the way. No one accomplishes anything important alone; let's do this together.

Several years of teaching college level research and writing for academic and professional contexts. Writing workshop certifications. Publish author. Currently teaching English Honors II and Pre-IB English for 9th graders.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

With a PhD in Education Policy and several years' experience as an educator, educational researcher, and educational leader, I have had many opportunities to refine my own public speaking skills while also helping others develop theirs. I received specialized training in effective presentation and speaking skills as a Fellow in the Strategic Data Program through Harvard Graduate School of Education. My career in education management specifically prepared me to coach others in public speaking and effective presentation for business audiences As a practicing English teacher and tutor, I frequently require my students to short presentations. I find this is especially important for my ESL students who need help with word choice to achieve specific effects, pronunciation, pacing and overall confidence. For my younger students, I like to have them memorize poems and short passages for recitation.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

I have worked with dozens of high school students preparing them for the SAT and ACT reading and writing sections with great success.
Writing

Writing

I earned a Master's Degree in Teaching Secondary English with an emphasis on teaching writing. As a published researcher and writer, I am fluent in helping students develop coherent and compelling research and expository papers. I have taught college level courses in writing for academic and career contexts, and the majority of my tutoring has focused on the writing process.

Patient and Understanding!

Whitney is very patient and understanding! She really took the time needed to figure where my daughter strengths and weakness were in order to offer the best strategies to build on weak areas.

Patient and engaging

Nice, interactive and knows her stuff; my son enjoyed reading the short story together and discussing the various aspects and learning new words.

Very detailed!

Whitney has been very patient and very detailed with my daughter when it came to identifying her SAT needs. She knew right away what my daughter needed to work on and provided us with suggestions for resources to purchase. I highly recommend her!

Very patient

Whitney started tutoring my Son in SAT English just this month of May. From what they have done so far I believe she is a great tutor.

Great Tutor - Very Accomodating and Excellent Student Interaction

Whitney is working with our high school age son who has struggled transitioning into high school schedules and home work demands. Whitney has worked with him on organization skills, homework tracking, and specific assignments. Additionally, she has begun to work with him on preparing for upcoming SAT and ACT exams through vocabulary skill building. We could not be happier with her engagement with our student and her commitment to seeing him improve. Excellent tutor!
