As a “Highly Qualified Teacher” under the No Child Left Behind Law and an 8-time award winning professional with 40+ years of teaching and tutoring experience, I have seen many students come through the door of my classroom. It has been my experience that each and every one of them has had the desire to learn. Maybe the topics they wanted and needed to discuss were not necessarily the subject matter of a Social Studies, Religion or English curriculum, but they certainly were always pertinent to their lives. With this in mind, I have had the opportunity to use the curriculum to teach my students what they want and need to know: how to succeed in this highly technological, highly competitive world.

My knowledge of the skills needed for a successful educational experience are particularly helpful in preparing students to lay the foundations necessary for achieving their academic goals. I set high, rigorous standards and help all students in the class to reach these expectations. I have been particularly gratified by student success based upon the New York, Florida, and Common Core Standards. Most of my students have achieved high scores on standardized tests such as the IOWA, CTBS, ERB,Stanford Achievement, and Woodcock-Johnson tests. In addition, my students have scored well on the New York State Regents and national Advanced Placement exams.

My teaching style incorporates Marzano’s Taxonomy and Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences, while my style of disciple incorporates techniques from Wong’s clearly defined expectations, Skinner’s Behavioral Modification, and Johnson’s Group Process Approach. I have been particularly successful in integrating cooperative learning, literature circles, portfolios, and alternative assessment to motivate reluctant learners. Bible Studies

Bible Studies

As a college professor with a Master's of Divinity, I welcome the opportunity to work individually in the area of Biblical Studies. I have taught survey courses in Old and New Testament studies as well as specialized courses including: Prophets, Women in the Bible, and Creeds. During my time as a Director of Christian Education in several small churches, I led Bible study groups on both teen and adult levels. My work with various Christian denominations and the Jewish community has afforded me the opportunity to become aware of various interpreations of Biblical passages. Sharing this Biblical knowledge through a tutoring experience will be an exciting continuation of my ministry.

I have taught English for 43 years. As a High School English Department Chair and Director of Curriculum Development, I have been responsible for updating textbooks and techniques to be used by my staff. I have written the course outlines for electives including: Shakespearean Theater, Film, Public Speaking, Debate, Journalism, Drama, Feminist Literature, and Ethnic Writers. In addition, I have publication of teacher guides for various works of literature pending. As teacher and tutor, I have specialized in improving writing skills through reading and vocabulary development.

With a master's degree in history, I set out 43 years ago to be a high school history teacher. The journey led me to several positions teaching world history culminating in a position teaching Western Civilization and Philosophy at South University. I would like to journey through historical times once again.

I absolutely love teaching grammar. If one understands the function of words in a sentence, one is able to write more clearly and concisely. I make grammar into a game, a puzzle to solve, so that it does not seem boring and arduous.

As a department chair and director of curriculum development, I have been responsible for updating material, techniques, and standards in several schools in New York and Florida. Having written syllabi for electives including: Shakespearean Theater, Film, Public Speaking, Debate, Journalism, Drama, Feminist Literature, and Ethnic Writers opened many venues for leaning both in the classroom and the home.

Reading

Reading is the window that opens many doors to learning. By reviewing basic reading skills and learning to incorporate them into the context of stories and larger works of literature, competency will soar. In turn, all content area reading will become easier as these skills are improved. A whole new world will be opened to a more enthusiastic reader.

After receiving my Master's of Divinity, I began to work as a Youth Minister and Director of Christian Education. Not only was I involved in parish life, but I was responsible for writing a curriculum and ordering materials for classes from cradle to grave for 5 parishes. In addition, I have taught Old and New Testament, World Religions, Ethics and Morality, Social Justice and Death and Dying on the middle school, high school and college levels. As teacher and facilitator, I have opened areas of discussion in which the participants delved into new and exciting experiences.

As an educator with a bachelor's and master's degree in history, I have taught social studies for more than 40 years. My experience covers grades 5-12. In addition to this classroom experience, I have also worked with several students who were in need of supportive and accelerated tutoring. This experience afforded me the opportunity to use many techniques over the years. Not only have I helped students to take notes from the text, video and lectures, I have also helped students to develop organization and study skills that have made them more successful in the classroom.

How many students say, "I don't have to know how to spell. I have spell check on my computer."? Almost every student I have taught in the past five years has said just that. Then they find out that spell check doesn't catch all mistakes. Well, that's why we still have to learn our spelling rules. I will give me the opportunity to review the rules you have learned and forgotten and incorporate them into your writing.

As a classroom teacher and tutor, I have found that in order for students to be successful, they need strong study skills. With this in mind, I wrote a curriculum for grades 6-8 covering areas such a time management, taking notes, notebook and book bag organization, test taking, outlining, writing essays and writing research papers. When my students applied these skills to the courses they were taking, grades improved.

As a teacher of English and Director of Curriculum at Atlantis Academy, I have developed a new vocabulary and writing program for K-12. The basic philosophy that "All children can learn" is incorporated into this curriculum and techniques have been devised to help all of our students eventually write on grade level using well developed sentence structure and vocabulary. In addition my position as Associate Professor of English/Writing at the University of Phoenix affords me the opportunity to use these techniques on the college level.

As an associate professor at the College of Sciences and Humanities of Phoenix University and a former high school history teacher, I have a wide and varied background in all fields of history. From the time of the Ancients to the present worldwide conflicts, I have a strong fondness for reading, research, and hands-on experiences. Whether it be through travel, a museum visit, or the Internet, my desire is to introduce others to the world around them and become an active member of this 21st century global society. Achieving an understanding of world history is the first of many steps in this direction.

To their credit, many of my writing students have won competitions and been published.
