I am a Harvard trained tutor who helps students in high school and college achieve their academic goals and fulfill their true potential. With a nod to the classical motto “Divide and Conquer,” I show students how to break down complex subjects, tasks, and assignments into manageable, easy to understand portions. Over the past ten years, I have helped students gain admission to all eight Ivy League colleges as well as to Georgetown University, University of Chicago, Case Western Reserve, University of Southern California, and other leading universities.
I offer comprehensive instruction in general writing procedures, college essay writing, English, history, art history, political science, macroeconomics, microeconomics, marketing, philosophy, psychology, and sociology, as well as preparation for standardized tests such as the SAT, the ACT, Advanced Placement, and securities industry exams. I conduct my tutoring sessions primarily on FaceTime, but I also offer in-person instruction when appropriate.
I am a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard College with a degree in psychology and sociology. A former New York Times columnist, I am the bestselling author of eight non-fiction books and over 300 newspaper and magazine articles. I am also a scratch golfer with a subspecialty in sports psychology.

Business

Business

I have a unique approach to teaching business based on my 40 plus years as an investigative reporter for major publications like the New York Times, Newsweek, and Texas Monthly, where I covered the oil, real estate, banking, legal, securities, commodities, and micro-finance industries. My objective journalist's perspective on business is enhanced by my personal experience investing in stocks, real estate, and various entrepreneurial enterprises. I show students how academic theory translates into real world practice.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

My approach to writing instruction is based on a 40 plus year career in journalism during which I have written 9 nonfiction books and over 300 newspaper and magazine articles. I believe that the three most important fundamentals in essay writing are structure, structure, and structure. I teach students three specific structures for argument essays, personal essays, and fictional works, as well as five general writing principles that apply to all types of essays.
Interview Prep

Interview Prep

I have learned the art of acing interviews -- as both an interviewer and an interviewee -- in my 40 plus year career as an investigative journalist for major publications like the New York Times, Newsweek, and Texas Monthly. I show students how to take the proverbial bull by the horns in interviews with strategies that enable them to present themselves in the most favorable light regardless of what questions they are asked. Along the way, I help students conquer performance anxieties through role playing and other techniques that make the interview process fun.
Series 3

Series 3

I have extensive experience in tutoring students to pass the Securities Industry License Exam. My teaching is based not only on my experience in tutoring students to pass standardized tests of many types, but also on my 50 plus years experience as an investor in stocks, bonds, and real estate. Along with helping students pass the exam at hand, I provide them with a conceptual understanding that will last a lifetime.
