About Kate

Hello! I have taught high school and college math since 1992. I've also tutored private students during most of that time. I love to work with students who struggle or don't like math very much. I like to go through things very slowly and not skip steps. I help students build confidence by breaking topics into small sections and rewarding each achievement.

I love math, but I understand that many people don't. My primary concern is getting students through the math needed to achieve their goals. Too often, math is a barrier to a great career. Some students need to build a base for more math in the future, but many students just need to survive so that they can get a degree or certification.

Please note that my calendar changes daily. If I don't have a convenient time available now, I probably will within a week. I tutor most of my students in-person, but several of my students take advantage of the Wyzant online platform for 15-minute sessions for homework help between regular sessions.

I have written the content for three online college-level textbooks in algebra, finite math, and math for liberal arts. I have written the materials for test review workshop for the TEAS VI. The TEAS VI is used as an entrance exam for many nursing schools. It covers math, science (anatomy, biology, chemistry, geology, physics, and physiology), English grammar, and reading comprehension. I have worked as a test scorer for the GRE, California Standards Test, and the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE).

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Finite Math

I taught Finite Math for 5 semesters at Ivy Tech Community College in Indianapolis, Indiana. I was also a tutor in the tutoring lab. I helped students with many courses including Finite Math. I'm currently employed by eMath (makers of math software) to write content for their Finite Math ebook.

Geometry

I have taught geometry in the classroom for four years. I teach geometry using the classical proof method using constructions. I can tutor students learning by any of the popular teaching methods. For students preparing for standardized exams such as the SAT or ACT, I have a lesson packet to review concepts and formulas in 1-2 hours.

Reading

I worked as an essay grader for the College Board for two years. Recently, I completed a section on reading skills and comprehension for my test preparation manual to be published in December 2015. I teach students to successfully answer questions on passage-passed reading, sentence completion, and proof-reading. I use examples and practice questions to help students achieve speed and accuracy.

Study Skills

I have integrated study skills into my tutoring for over 20 years. I teach goal-setting and organization using time management grids. For procrastination problems, I teach the Pomodoro method. I have several solutions for test anxiety including relaxation exercises, self-confidence builders, and practice tests. Other skills I teach include mind-mapping, note-taking, research, organizing information, and memory work.

TEAS

I have helped several students successfully prepare for the TEAS. Four years ago, I developed a 5-day (35 hours) workshop for students preparing for the TEAS. The workshop covered all parts of the TEAS (reading comprehension, math, science, and grammar). I taught the workshop every month for three years. Currently, I am writing a test preparation manual for the TEAS that is scheduled to be published in April.

Knowledgeable in Algebra 1033 and Very Patient

I needed help with Algebra 1033. My first lesson with Kate was great. Her thoughts are organized and she knew the material. She was willing to go over each problem until I had a thorough understanding. Thank you.
