About Joan

All my life I wanted to teach. When I was little, I used to play a board game called "Go To the Head of the Class" with the other neighborhood kids.

I have been teaching and tutoring for the last 30 years. I am also a certified IOWA tester. Most of my experience has been one-on one. I have great patience and the ability to know exactly what a student is asking and explain it in a way that the student will understand. Too many times I have sat in a class and watched someone get frustrated after asking the teacher to explain something and being given an answer has nothing to do with what the student asked. I will never do that to you.

During my last tutoring assignment, I raised a student's math ability from 3rd grade to over fifth grade in 4 months. Proof of this is provided by her IOWA test results. Of course, we worked about 20 hours a week, but she was 14 and had been home tutored by someone who was evidently not qualified or able to explain things well enough for the student to learn. When I started, she couldn't add, subtract, multiply, or divide even whole numbers. Now she can do the four operations on fractions, mixed numbers, decimals, geometry, and she greatly improved her spelling and proofreading skills. Care, concern, ability, understanding, patience and success are the qualities I can bring to you.

I have taken numerous math classes in order to be qualified to teach college level science classes. I have taken college math classes up to and including differential equations.

I have recently been tutoring elementary math including the new Singapore Math that many school are now using. Geometry was my favorite subject in HS and I can explain topics so that they are easily understood

I became interested in Astronomy in college. After college, I became the Education Coordinator for a planetarium and worked there for 13 years. My duties included providing in-service teaching to Broward County school teachers. I also designed educational activities in astronomy and did numerous outreach programs written by me. I became an expert on telescopes, including aligning them and belonged to and volunteered for the Southern Cross Astronomical Society in Miami.

Become a success! I will work with you at your speed to understand and conquer any barriers to your learning. Imagine you are the ruler of your kingdom and educational problems are the fire-breathing dragons at your door. Right now they may be winning, but together we will slay each one as it appears. And soon you will discover that they have all been defeated! Let me help you to be a fantastic student,

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Master's in Elementary Science Education, and have been teaching 5-7 children in grades ranging from kindergarten to sixth grade. Three of them started with me in kindergarten. In each year, another student started in kindergarten until I had students in high school, 7th grade, 6th, 5th, and 1st. They were home schooled and I was their teacher. The students came from three families. I am a certified IOWA tester and at the end of each school year, I gave them the IOWA test to gauge their progress. One of my 7th graders scored no less than the equivalent of 10th grade and on 4 tests, she was given a score of 12th grade +. I was so proud of her!

Elementary Math

I have taught and tutored both regular math and the new Singapore math that many schools are now using. My master's degree is in elementary science education and allowed me to study math through calculus and up to differential equations. But my real math love comes from teaching young children and getting them started on the right track to enjoy and understand math for a lifetime.

English

I have an MS in Elementary Education, but I have also worked with high school and college students. tutoring them and helping to raise their grades. I even taught in college for seven years. English and grammar have always been my favorite subjects. I excel in both of them.

I have the knack of understanding where the student is confused and how to help them. I see too many instructors give an answer that had nothing to do with the student's question. I will answer all of their questions and help them understand subject.

Grammar

My grammar, proofreading, and English in general have always been superior. I have been working one-on-one with numerous children to improve and correct their grammar skills. I have tutored for more than 15 years and have an MA in elementary science education, but grammar is my real love. I have excelled in grammar and writing since grade school.

Phonics

I have taught reading to 7 students. All of them now excel in both reading and spelling. I use a method slightly different from phonics. I use a type of "synthetic" phonics, that in my experience of teaching reading, allows the student to begin to read much quicker and better than average.

With both types of phonics, the desired result is the same, After all, the goal of phonics is to learn to read. My method is so similar to phonics that the child will not be confused when studying phonics in the classroom.

This "synthetic" phonics is even now bring closely studied by expert educators as a superior teaching method to regular phonics.

Reading

I have a Master's degree in elementary education and worked expensively with students having problems with comprehension. For the last 12 years, I worked as teacher/tutor to 7 children ranging from kindergarten to 5th grade. And each year as they advanced, so did I with their studies. It was a home school environment and I was their only teacher for their entire school experience. They are all doing well, but unfortunately they had to move and I couldn't go with them. But the good news is that now I can help you.
