I have taught elementary school for 35 years. I am currently retired but have always stayed on top of current best practice. During my 35 years I have taught kindergarten through 3rd grade and was a reading specialist and literacy coach for 14 of those years. As a reading specialist I saw small groups of struggling readers and as a literacy coach I provided coaching and support in the area of reading to classroom teachers. In addition, I taught Reading Recovery for 7 years which is a specialized reading program for at risk learners in first grade.
I earned my bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Elmhurst University in Illinois. Shortly after I earned my first master’s degree in education at Concordia in Illinois and then I went on to earn my second master’s degree in reading at Roosevelt University in Illinois. In between earning my two masters degrees, I went through a year long training as a Reading Recovery teacher. This was an intense, hands on, year long training at the graduate level through National Louis University in Illinois.
Although my specialty is in reading, I have expertise in all areas related to reading such as spelling, phonics and writing. I also have expertise in math, especially Go Math.
I believe learning should be fun and take time to get to know my student’s in order to understand their strengths, areas of need and interests. This allows me to design lessons that are powerful and engaging.
