Hi! I’m Ryan. I am a former Hillsborough County Public Schools science/math teacher currently working in the finance industry with more than fourteen of experience specializing in SAT preparation.

I previously held Florida teaching certifications in Mathematics (Grades 5–9), Chemistry (Grades 6–12), and Exceptional Student Education (Grades K–12). In 2010, as a high school junior, I earned a perfect 800 on the SAT Mathematics section, along with scores of 670 in Critical Reading and 710 in Writing, including a 9/10 on the essay, for a score of 2180/2400 (98th percentile), equivalent to approximately 1510/1600 today.

Since 2012, I have worked extensively with students preparing for the SAT and strengthening their mathematical and reading comprehension foundations. My instruction emphasizes subject mastery, disciplined problem-solving, efficient test-taking strategies, and confidence under timed conditions.

I have assignments for students of varying ability, but all students are expected to create SAT flashcards, the key to my SAT prep method. Students transform missed questions from official practice tests into personalized review resources designed to reinforce understanding and improve long-term retention.

Sessions are conducted remotely, from my home in Carrollwood (Tampa), or from the Starbucks at 10002 N Dale Mabry Hwy, Tampa, FL 33618. I meet with most students once weekly for one hour but can and will adjust this based on a student's goals, grade level, and time remaining until test day.

My first paid tutoring position came in 2012, while I was attending The Ohio State University. Working for The Tutoring Club of Hilliard in Ohio, I tutored 34 students in Algebra I. During my time there, I learned several different approaches to teaching the same mathematical concepts. This experience helped me develop one of the most important skills I bring to tutoring today: the ability to adapt my explanation to the individual student. If a student struggles to understand a concept or problem when it is explained one way, I can approach it from a different angle until we find an explanation that makes sense to them. Although this may sound straightforward, developing the ability to consistently do this effectively has taken years of experience. My experience with Algebra I began even earlier. As a peer tutor in high school, I worked with middle school students taking Honors Algebra I as well as freshmen enrolled in Algebra I. Aside from pre-algebra, Algebra I was the first subject I ever tutored. After my sophomore year of high school, I shifted my focus toward Algebra II, as there was greater demand for Algebra II tutors and fewer students were qualified to provide that level of instruction. Beginning in my junior year, Algebra II became the lowest-level mathematics course I tutored. Since moving to Florida in 2015, I have worked with approximately 100 additional middle and high school students in Algebra I. Overall, I have tutored approximately 300 students in algebra-related courses, and I have conducted more one-on-one tutoring sessions in Algebra I than in any other school subject. Having taught and tutored Algebra I students in New Jersey, Ohio, and Florida, I have developed a thorough understanding of the subject and the way its core concepts are typically introduced and sequenced. While individual teachers and schools may vary in their approach, the fundamental material remains remarkably consistent. tutoring experience across these three subjects. The material covered in Algebra II can vary considerably from state to state and even from one school district to another. Some Algebra II courses, for example, include a substantial unit on trigonometry, while others do not. Honors Algebra II courses can vary even more, as instructors often have greater flexibility to introduce additional topics after covering the required curriculum. Regardless of which topics are included in your Algebra II course, I am familiar with the material and understand the typical progression in which these concepts are introduced. I also have extensive experience tutoring mathematics at the collegiate level. I have worked with several college students, as well as a number of adult learners, primarily in College Algebra and, to a lesser extent, Intermediate Algebra. Intermediate Algebra is highly comparable to the material covered in a typical or honors high school Algebra II course. College Algebra builds upon many of these same concepts and generally extends the level of difficulty and abstraction. In addition to tutoring students who are already enrolled in algebra courses, I have substantial experience preparing students for the mathematics portions of the PERT and ASVAB. The PERT is a mathematics placement exam used to determine a student's appropriate level of college mathematics coursework. I have helped students prepare for the exam with the goal of placing directly into credit-bearing mathematics courses and avoiding remedial coursework. Whether you are a high school sophomore taking Algebra II for the first time, a student enrolled in an honors Algebra II course, or a college student taking Intermediate or College Algebra, I am confident in my ability to help you understand the material, strengthen your problem-solving skills, and improve your performance on exams.

I've tutored several students aged 5-14 in elementary math. The highest level math course I have taken is calculus III. When tutoring elementary math (any math class taken before pre-algebra), I first have to gain an understanding of what the student is being taught and in which areas he or she is struggling. The subject matter varies greatly in elementary math. Obviously, a 12 year old will be learning more difficult material than an 8 year old. Before meeting with students, I first ask that parents send me a few example problems from their child's homework. That way, when we begin our first lesson, I already know which material is being taught and I can easily determine what needs to be reviewed. Math is a very difficult subject, even at the elementary level. I like to tutor my younger students in an environment in which they are comfortable (normally their own home). Each student learns in his or her own particular way. The lesson plans that I devise are unique to every student. Over the years, I've learned several different ways to teach the exact same material. If a student is having trouble understanding a concept, I can very easily alter the way I am explaining that concept. It takes longer for some students than others, but I always find a way to get through to students struggling with math. I've learned to be very patient when tutoring at the elementary level. Although the subject matter is extremely simple from my perspective, I realize that it can be very difficult for students. I'm always sure to take my time and work at the student's pace when tutoring at this level. I like to challenge my students, but the last thing I want to do is decrease their confidence or make them feel incapable. With proper instruction and determination, anyone can improve his or her grade in mathematics.
Prealgebra

Pre-Algebra is my favorite mathematics course to tutor because it represents such an important transition from elementary to secondary-level mathematics. For many students, this transition can be challenging. For the first time, they are introduced to variables and begin working with mathematical concepts that are more abstract than what they have encountered previously. While some students grasp these ideas naturally, others need additional time and a different approach before they become comfortable with them. I began tutoring Pre-Algebra in 2008, when I was a freshman in high school. Through the National Honor Society, I volunteered at a local middle school once a week after school, helping students with elementary mathematics, pre-algebra, and Honors Algebra I. Throughout high school, I continued working with middle school students in Pre-Algebra. Later, while working for The Tutoring Club of Hilliard, I tutored exactly 18 students in Pre-Algebra. Since moving to Florida, I have worked with approximately 100 additional students in the subject. One of the most rewarding aspects of tutoring Pre-Algebra is watching students develop an entirely new perspective on mathematics. As students begin to understand variables, equations, functions, and other foundational concepts, mathematics often starts to become less about memorizing procedures and more about understanding how and why things work. I find this shift in perspective particularly rewarding as a tutor. I have a thorough understanding of the material typically covered in Pre-Algebra, as well as the order in which these concepts are generally introduced. More importantly, I understand that students do not all learn mathematics in the same way. My goal is to build a strong mathematical foundation while helping students become more confident and comfortable with the subject. PSAT

he PSAT is remarkably similar to the SAT. The Reading and Writing questions follow essentially the same format and test the same skills, although they are generally somewhat easier. The mathematics sections are also highly similar to the SAT, though the questions tend to be less difficult and cover a somewhat narrower range of concepts. I have tutored dozens of students specifically for the PSAT, and nearly all of my PSAT students have subsequently worked with me to prepare for the SAT. Most of my former PSAT students were freshmen or sophomores in high school. Taking the PSAT can be an excellent way for younger students to familiarize themselves with the format and establish a baseline for their performance. When it comes to preparation, however, I generally encourage older students and their parents to focus primarily on the SAT rather than treating the PSAT as a completely separate test. While PSAT scores can have benefits—including helping students qualify for certain academic opportunities and scholarships—the SAT is typically more consequential for the college admissions process. For PSAT Reading and Writing preparation, I focus heavily on helping students recognize the different question types and develop an efficient strategy for approaching each one. For Mathematics, I place particular emphasis on learning when and how to use Desmos, as effectively incorporating the calculator can significantly improve both speed and accuracy. I have dedicated more than 1,500 hours to SAT preparation, including over 900 hours through WyzAnt, with a particular focus on SAT Math. I also personally earned a perfect 800 on the SAT Math section as a high school junior in 2010. A central component of my program is what I call SAT Math Flashcards. Students create personalized flashcards using the specific problems they answer incorrectly while completing practice modules for homework. Each card includes the original problem and a detailed solution, allowing students to systematically review the concepts and problem-solving strategies they need to master. In my experience, consistent acquisition and active review of these flashcards is one of the most effective ways to improve SAT Math performance. Students who consistently follow my program and put in the necessary work see meaningful and measurable improvement in their scores.
SAT Reading

Since 2012, I have dedicated more than 1,000 hours to helping students prepare specifically for the SAT Reading and Writing sections. I also personally earned a combined score of 710/800 on the SAT’s Reading and Writing sections as a high school junior in 2010. Of course, the SAT has changed considerably since then. The essay has been eliminated, the former Writing section no longer exists, and the test itself has undergone two major overhauls. I have kept pace with these changes and continually refined my approach to ensure that my instruction reflects the current SAT. The digital SAT Reading and Writing section consists of a relatively small number of recurring question types. I organize these into eight categories: vocabulary, dual-text, main purpose, complete the passage, table/graph, grammar, transition, and research. While the College Board categorizes these questions somewhat differently, I have found that students who become thoroughly familiar with these eight types are better equipped to recognize the specific skills each question is testing and approach them efficiently. I teach students how to approach each question type strategically, accurately, and efficiently. A central component of my approach is the creation and systematic review of personalized SAT Reading and Writing flashcards. When a student answers a practice question incorrectly, the question is placed on an index card. During our sessions, the student writes a detailed explanation of the correct answer on the back of the card. This creates a personalized study system based entirely on the student's own mistakes and areas for improvement. For many question types, I teach students to categorize the answer choices as "maybes" or "nos" and then use evidence from the passage to identify the most logical choice among the maybes. For other question types, I teach students where to begin reading and how to focus their attention on the information most relevant to the question. Superb SAT tutor

We hired Ryan to help our Junior improve her SAT score. She is incredibly intelligent, takes AP classes and gets straight A's but none of this reflected in her SAT score. She is a horrible test taker, timed tests freak her out. Ryan worked with her all summer. His method of having students take a pre-test each week so he can customize the homework and zone in on the weaknesses is brilliant! Since numbers don't lie I'll happily share that two months ago she was pre-testing at around an 1160 and last week she score a 1500! We are so incredibly happy and thankful we found Ryan!
