The student enjoyed fashion and make-up. I explained the Order of Operation concept in terms of her having to apply make-up! It sounds silly, however, difficult concepts have more clarity when they become relative. Every child has an individual learning style. I always introduce new concepts through visual, audio, and tactile methods of learning. In addition, students learn best when they teach someone else. Hence, I often give a homework assignment for the students to teach their parents a particular lesson that they have learned.
