Hi there, my name is Alexis! I am a recent graduate from the University of Florida. During my enrollment, I majored in math and obtained a 4.0 GPA. I also had a rigorous education minor, where I studied educational research and taught 4 different ages and subjects. Right now, I am pursuing a biomedical engineering graduate degree at the University of South Florida.
Currently, I am available to tutor math from the 6th grade level to the AP/IB/AICE and college levels. Teaching within this range, I have been a successful one-on-one tutor for the past 8 years. A mom of one of my students said, “She not only has advanced knowledge in the subject material, but also a great ability to break down this information so it can be understood.”
My lessons are focused on making the subject understandable and enjoyable. I start by really getting to know students, both socially and academically. My lesson plans are centered around that individual student and what works best for them. Ultimately, I aim to make students understand what they are learning instead of memorizing meaningless steps and formulas. Also, I make sure students’ foundation in older topics is strong before we delve into a new one.
I love lessons that are visual and hands-on. For example, to teach a student to graph lines in slope-intercept form, I once created a coordinate plane out of masking tape on the floor. We acted as the points on the graph, starting at the y-intercept and then jumping up and over to represent the slope.
These strategies and others allow my students to enjoy themselves and succeed. One of my clients has shared, “One of our high school boys lacked the confidence to enroll in Calculus AB. To get him over this hump, Alexis developed a study curriculum and tutored him four days per week this past summer. Under her direction, he has really taken off and is performing at an A-level in this highly challenging course.”
I truly care about every student, and I am excited to help them shine.
