Bio

I’m Jesse and though I’m new to Wyzant, I’m not new to tutoring. In the first year of my MFA at George Mason University, I received 4.5 out 5 in Writer feedback at the Writing Center as well as praise for all four outreach sessions I conducted. At the start of my second year, I stepped into the classroom and though it was challenging at first, the aspect(s) I enjoyed from the Writing Center kept me invested. I incorporated executive function skills, fallacies, how to stay organized, note-taking, and at least one round of revision for every assignment in my teaching; everything I wish I’d been offered early in my undergraduate studies. Two of my sections of English 101 were recognized as Outstanding Mason Core Written Communication courses.

I was the graduate TA for a double-sized (90 students) section of English 301, a gateway course including literature, rhetoric, and exploration of several genres. In addition to assisting with the course, I also delivered two lectures on comics as a genre and study skills.
In my Creative Writing course, we explored nonfiction, poetry, and worldbuilding as well. The course wasn't just turning students loose on a blank page and hoping for the best, but incorporated discussion of readings, tropes, genre, likes and dislikes, motivation, and how to get unstuck.

When GMU had to transition rather quickly to online instruction in Spring 2020, I successfully adapted my Literature & Creative Writing sections to virtual learning and kept the majority of students not just attending but enthusiastic.

In tutoring, I model myself after the instructors I enjoyed; being flexible, enthusiastic, attentive and open to suggestion.
