Bio

I'm John! I graduated with my B.S. in Marine Science from Stockton University in New Jersey and a Ph.D. in Oceanography from Florida State University. In college I realized that a professor can really make or break a class. Even if I wasn't particularly interested in the course, with a good teacher that course became my favorite of the semester.

While in graduate school I started tutoring student athletes in biology and oceanography, where I could apply engaging and fun lessons in 1 on 1...

I'm John! I graduated with my B.S. in Marine Science from Stockton University in New Jersey and a Ph.D. in Oceanography from Florida State University. In college I realized that a professor can really make or break a class. Even if I wasn't particularly interested in the course, with a good teacher that course became my favorite of the semester.

While in graduate school I started tutoring student athletes in biology and oceanography, where I could apply engaging and fun lessons in 1 on 1 or small group sessions to help students succeed in their classes. After graduate school I continued tutoring online in 1 on 1 sessions. These sessions ranged from simple review of 1 problem the student just wanted to have checked, to full classroom-style lectures, and everything in between. Most commonly I saw college students who were having trouble in their online biology and statistics classes. Just reading the book was not the best way for them to learn, and these students greatly benefited from the lecture style and flexibility I was able to provide.

I was also an online tutor supervisor for three years, with up to 30 tutors on my team. This allowed me to not only guide other tutors to improve the effectiveness of their sessions but also allowed me to learn from many unique styles of effective tutoring. Over 10 years of tutoring and supervising tutors has taught me that every student learns differently, and that the most effective tutors are flexible in their approach in order to match what's best for the student. Honing my flexibility has been key to ensuring every session is as engaging and effective as possible.

One of the most common goals in a tutoring session is studying for an exam. If it's the night before the test, we'll work together using the students notes and book to go over the test topics, and I'll ask content questions to test their understanding and memory. If it's early in the semester, I'll create a plan with the student for note taking and studying a little every day. During sessions we can then focus on the areas most difficult to the student, ensuring understanding. This method of class preparation results in not only higher grades but also less test anxiety.
