I like to use hands-on activities, question and discussion, and illustrations to help students understand and master concepts. I also incorporate real world problems (math) and scenarios (reading) to help students practically apply skills.
In my time as a teacher, I have had much success with students who may be struggling in certain areas, because I identify their specific weaknesses and target the specific skills that will help strengthen their weaknesses.
