About Marcelo

Hello students! Here is what I have to offer:

1) My teaching approach and philosophy

Teaching Mathematics + helping students succeed has always been one of passions. That is why I have been doing it for over 20 years. I enjoy the process of figuring out what is causing a student to struggle and offering them the tools to overcome those difficulties. Nothing is more satisfying to me than the "a-ha moment." So whether you need help preparing for a particular test or continuous assistance throughout the semester, I would love to be the one to help you get there and really understand the Math or Physics principles you need to solve the problems. I am always very patient and friendly, simply because I love what I do.

2) My experience

I hold a BS in electrical engineering (with concentration in Math) from the University of Kansas and a MS in Optics from the University of Rochester, in NY. Throughout my professional career as an engineer and scientist I have developed a number of very complex mathematical models (mostly using a tool called MATLAB) to address large, real industry technical problems. I have also taught Optics and Math full-time at a community college (Monroe Community College in Rochester, NY) and I have been tutoring others in Math, Physics and Portuguese (my native language) for over 20 years. My students have ranged from middle-school kids all the way to graduate students, which has helped me develop a number of teaching techniques appropriate for the diverse age groups with whom I have worked.

In closing, know that our sessions will feel like a conversation to you and, I believe, you will gain quite a bit from my relaxed teaching style, my experience and my passion for education. Let's get to work!

Sincerely,
Marcelo.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

- BS in Electrical Engineering & MS in Optics (Physics)
- 2 years of full-time teaching (Optics & Math) at a community college.
- I have worked with a number of students requiring ACT Math preparation.
- I teach test-taking techniques, which allow students to maximize their efficiency and get rid of the anxiety during the actual test.
- Very familiar with teaching techniques for helping students understand topics required for standardized Math tests: linear equations, function theory, logic, plane Geometry, the Cartesian Plane, Complex Numbers, Number Theory, polynomials, trigonometric functions and many more.

Algebra 2

- Lots of practice teaching: linear equations, fundamental properties of Algebra, number sets, simplification of expressions, among other common topics.
- 2 years of full-time teaching (Optics & Math) at a community college.
- Very patient and friendly with kids.
- Very "hand on:" I show the student the basic principles or concepts and then we jump right into as many problems as possible, letting the do the work while observing every step and offering the appropriate guidance.

Calculus

- BS in Electrical Engineering with Honors.
- MS in Optics (Physics) with Highest Honors.
- 12 years of experience in the industry, as a scientist, developing solutions for very complex problems.
- 2 years of full-time teaching (Optics & Math) at a community college.
- VERY patient and friendly.
- Very familiar with teaching techniques for helping students understand: limits, derivatives, integrals, max/min problems, function theory, graphing, infinite series, among many other topics.

Differential Equations

While obtaining my MS in Optics from the University of Rochester I was exposed to a number of problems in Physical and Geometrical Optics which required a strong foundation in Differential Equations.

Additionally, Differential Equations (partial and ordinary) played a key role in the development of several of my image and video-processing algorithms, while working as an imaging scientist at the Eastman Kodak company. I have also tutored coworkers and undergraduate students on the well-known techniques and numerical methods for solving several classes of linear Differential Equations.

Discrete Math

Discrete Math played a key role in the development and implementation of several of my image and video-processing algorithms, while working as an imaging scientist at the Eastman Kodak company. I have also tutored coworkers and undergraduate students on the subject.

My areas of expertise in Discrete Mathematics include:
- Discrete Calculus
- Logic
- Discretization/Sampling Techniques
- Combinatorics

Geometry

Having worked with several students over the years, I have developed effective techniques for teaching the fundamental topics in Geometry:
* Angle measurements, similar polygons, congruent triangles, area/volume problems, calculations of perimeters, problems involving circles and circumferences, etc.
* I was a professor of Math and Physics at a community college, full-time, for 2 years.
* BS in Electrical Engineering and MS in Optics.
* Very patient.

Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra played a key role in the development of several of my image and video-processing algorithms, while working as an imaging scientist at the Eastman Kodak company. I have also tutored coworkers and undergraduate students on the subject.

My background in Linear Algebra encompasses the following areas (both theory and algorithm implementation techniques):

- Linear transformations
- Matrix theory (and solutions of linear systems)
- Properties of vector spaces
- Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors

Logic

I have studied Boolean logic in school, during my undergraduate courses. Lately I used it for the construction of truth-tables which were, in turn, used in image-processing algorithms. I have also tutored undergraduate students in logic.

MATLAB

I have first used MATLAB in engineering school, for projects and assignments. Then, for over a decade I used MATLAB to develop complex mathematical models for both image processing and Optics. I have also taught introductory courses in MATLAB.

Physics

Qualifications:
- BS in Electrical Engineering w/ Honors.
- MS in Optics (Physics) w/ Highest Honors.
- 12 years of experience in the industry, as a scientist, developing solutions for very complex problems.
- 2 years of full-time teaching (Optics & Math) at a community college.

Precalculus

The key to success for a student who is taking Calculus is a strong foundation on what is called "precalculus." I provide that foundation and present it in a way which is aimed at dealing with the types of problems one finds in a Calculus class.
My credentials are:
BS in Electrical Engineering & MS in Optics (Physics) with Highest Honors.
- 12 years of experience in the industry, as a scientist, developing solutions for very complex problems.
- 2 years of full-time teaching (Optics & Math) at a community college.
- VERY patient and friendly.
- Experienced with teaching: polynomials, exponential and logarithmic functions, geometric notion of limits, derivatives and integrals, Cartesian Geometry and all the other topics required for the foundation necessary for Calculus.
