About Jessica

I obtained my undergraduate degree from Florida Southern College with a major in Biology and minors in psychology and chemistry with a summa cum laude. I received my medical degree from Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine. As a medical student, I took countless exams and know how overwhelming schoolwork can be.

I tutored students while I attended Florida Southern College where I enjoyed assisting with the learning process. I love helping students discover ways to strengthen their weaknesses by determining how they best comprehend information via tactile, visual, auditory, or a combination of the aforementioned methods. In addition to ascertaining the optimal approach toward learning, test taking skills are reviewed with you to sharpen your ability to demonstrate your proficiency in a given subject.

I am willing to meet students in public libraries or their own homes. I do have a 24 hour cancellation policy so I can adequately prepare for sessions. I look forward to guiding, explaining, and aiding you to achieve your academic goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have tutored students in the past for Algebra I. The emphasis is placed on understanding the concepts and applying them to real world problems. Once the foundations are acknowledged, then memorization is deemed unnecessary.

Bible Studies

While attending Florida Southern College, I took the Old Testament class and passed with an A. I also led three different bible studies each one focused on a particular topic or book of the bible. I continue to read studies on the bible.

Botany

I took Botany in college and passed with an A. Furthermore, I worked with the botany professor for all 4 years of my undergraduate studies where I set up laboratory tests and experiments for the his plant taxonomy course. In addition to aiding with his classes, I assisted with performing experiments and took the medicinal botany course.

Elementary (K-6th)

Middle school and high school learning is built upon the education taught in elementary school. Having tutored both middle school and high school students, I have discovered that sometimes it is necessary to review basic subjects initially taught in elementary school. Having a deep understanding of introductory mathematics, writing, reading, history, and science assists students so they can excel in future academic courses. I am in the process of receiving my medical degree from Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

English

While I attended high school, I took the first two years of college English and received an A in all of those courses. Furthermore, I obtained both college and high school credit (dual enrollment) when I took those classes. English is essential for proper communication and as a foundation to build upon other courses.

Genetics

As a biology major in college, I took several science courses. I took genetics and received an A in the class. I participated in both the lecture and lab aspect of the class.

MCAT

I took the MCAT when I was applying for medical school. My score combined with my GPA from college were sufficient for me to become accepted to more than one medical school. Preparing for this test includes possessing a working knowledge of the information tested and having good test taking skills. Since I took this test, I have tutored other students on how to prepare and they have succeeded.

Microsoft Outlook

I have used Microsoft Outlook for several years for both academic and career purposes. I can explain how to send, reply, and forward emails. I know how to send a blind carbon copy or a carbon copy. Moreover, I know how to attach word documents, Microsoft PowerPoint presentations, or photographs to an email. I have tutored in the past as to how to use this particular program.

Nursing

As a medical student, I worked alongside nurses of all levels. Prior to medical school, I worked in an endoscopic clinic where I prepared IVs, bedding, and patient charts. I have taken medical histories of patients as well as presented case studies before physicians, nurses, and hospital staff.

Nutrition

I took nutrition as a course in medical school. I have observed the great importance and impact of healthy eating on patient management and prognosis. I also took biochemistry in both college and medical school where I learned about the basic units of proteins, how the body processes sugar, and how the body maintains a homeostatic state.

Pharmacology

As a physician, pharmacology is an important aspect of patient management. I took this course when I was in medical school. I use pharmacology to aid in the treatment of various medical conditions.

Prealgebra

I have taken pre-algebra while I was in middle school. In high school, I took algebra I, algebra II, and trig. I passed all of those courses and took more advanced classes when I was in college.

Psychology

I attended Florida Southern College and obtained a minor in psychology. I took the following psychology courses: introduction to psychology parts one and two, abnormal psychology, developmental psychology, and physiologic psychology. In all of these courses, I obtained an A for my grade. Furthermore, I participated in a research project within the field of psychology that assessed what makes art creative. I later presented the results at an annual psychology conference.

Public Speaking

Public speaking is a skill I have used throughout my academic courses. In college I took public speaking and received an A. During medical school, I gave several presentations and did well. Because of my experience with public speaking, I am able to provide guidance as to how to present information in a concise and understandable way.

Study Skills

Through my academic career, I have taken and passed the FCAT, ACT, SAT, MCAT, and the COMLEX. I took Kaplan review courses to aid in my preparation. As a result of having to prepare for these examinations, I have acquired a knowledge of how to study for a test based on its format and concepts being tested. Furthermore, I have discovered optimal methods for retaining information for testing purposes. In fact,I have tutored both high school and college age students for the MCAT and classroom based exams. My experience with tests provides me the ability to assist students to learn adequate study skills.
