Hi! My name is Katherine and I am an experienced math tutor. I started out working mostly with middle schoolers, but now I work with middle schoolers, high schoolers, and college students. My methods involve building strong, positive relationships with my students in order to motivate them and reduce their anxiety about math, and individualizing my approach based on the needs and personality of each student.

I have a Master's Degree in Math Education, and I hold a Florida Teacher's Certificate in a variety of areas, including Math and ESE. I worked in Orlando area schools for 9 years, first with non-English speakers, and then with students with learning disabilities. I am very familiar with the skills for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, since I worked with all of these on a daily basis. I switched from teaching to full-time tutoring in Fall 2017, and as my students moved on to high school, I worked with high school math too, including Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II. In my own schooling, I enjoyed math and took math classes up to Calc III.

I have also worked with many Gifted students since I started tutoring, and I have been successful with reducing their math anxiety and answering their perceptive questions about the details of the math.

Katherine studied Math Education and Spanish at the University of Central Florida and received her Master’s Degree in Math Ed in 2013. She worked in Orlando area schools for 9 years before becoming a full-time tutor. As a Support Facilitator for Math, she helped middle schoolers understand the Common Core curriculum (HMH’s “Go Math”) every day. She also studied the elementary school Common Core standards so she could better help her students with filling in the gaps in their prior math knowledge.

Special Needs

Katherine first learned about ESE students in her previous job as an ESOL teacher, where a few of her students had learning disabilities, in addition to their language issues. She found it very rewarding working with those students and improving their confidence. Later, she became fully qualified as an ESE teacher, and worked as a middle school Support Facilitation teacher for ESE students in regular education classrooms. Her job involved helping all sorts of ESE students (ADHD, SLD, high-functioning ASD, and EBD) to understand the assignments during their regular math class, helping a few ESE students during homeroom to get organized and catch up on classwork for all subjects, and talking to parents, teachers, and administrators in order to write her students’ IEPs and figure out how to best help each student.

Knowledgeable, kind, engaging tutor

Working with Kathy (Katherine) has been a joy.
