I tutor students from the kindergarten through college level in subjects ranging from Pre-calculus to Writing to History. I have been tutoring for over 16 years, as my principle occupation for the past 8, and have seen over 100 students respond to individualized explanation. I tutor students from the kindergarten through college level in subjects ranging from Pre-calculus to Writing to History. I connect with those who struggle with learning difficulties as well as those working well above grade level and those working toward ambitious goals.

I believe that helping a student must involve understanding "not getting it." Therefore, I make it my priority to figure out how a student is thinking about a particular concept and how best to meet him or her there so that we can then work toward the correct thinking process together. When it comes to a skill, I like to start as basic as possible, then move on to more complex examples, and, finally, teach how to recognize and apply the skill in context. I believe this last step is important and often glossed-over in textbooks but crucial for tests. For some students, the material needs to be broken down as much as possible. I usually focus on skills first and correct vocab and terminology later, especially when it comes to math. I am passionate about integrated learning and when tutoring a student in multiple subjects or SAT/ACT prep, encourage them to draw connections wherever possible.

I am dedicated to being individualized and my greatest asset as a tutor is an ability to adapt to different thinking styles and situations, often on the spur of the moment. Each of my tutees have learned to trust that I will come up with a way to explain the material in a way he or she can understand. One of the great things about being a long-term, full-time tutor is getting to absorb through my students a huge variety of well-honed teaching tactics from a range of schools and teachers. This lets me bring the best of the best to each session and gives me a deep well of things to try, as well as insight into what might work for particular students.

These tests are designed to test critical thinking rather than just skills learned in class, and it can be a bit of an adjustment even for a good student to start understanding what the test makers are looking for.

I have successfully worked with several students at the elementary and junior high level to improve their study skills and organization for all subjects. I have years of experience identifying learning styles and creating adaptive techniques that demonstrate how to make studying more efficient and fun. For this to be successful, I develop a sense of trust with the student and help him or her see that better studying leads to more time enjoying the things that he or she likes to do. I also make sure that I provide them with a range of options for studying so they have a "tool box" they can pick from. Having these choices lets them become less reliant and more independent learners. It also relieves frustration because the student has a back up when the proscribed method isn't working. In addition, I include the parents because it is important for parents to be aware of these methods and styles and the ways in which their kids learn.

Great tutor, worth every penny

I had Kathryn help me on my College Algebra after my first test in class was a big failure. I had hired several tutors before her but most of them had no clue on what to do or how to teach. Kathryn jumped right to to the point without wasting my time. I worked with her until the end of the semester and I ended up passing the class with an A. She was always very knowledgeable on the college algebra homework, quizzes and tests. One of the most appreciated tools that she offered was that I could contact her by email or text if I got stuck on my homework. I cannot say enough positive things about Kathryn – not only is she an amazing human but a phenomenal tutor as well. After making the decision to return to college to pursue a degree in the medical field, I knew I had my work cut out for me. I was drowning in trigonometry (it had been 7 years since my last math course), and barely getting by in chemistry (9 years since my last science class). Math and Science are definitely not my strengths, and I was already beginning to doubt my decision to return to school. Kathryn gave me the tools and confidence to keep going. She spends the time getting to know your learning strengths and weaknesses and gears her instruction towards your individual learning style. She is patient, smart, and understanding. Because of her, I was able to pass both courses with an A.
