Hi! My name is Eric. I am a recent college graduate from Pacific Lutheran University. I graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor's in Percussion Performance in 2020 and was fortunate to have many performing as well as educational opportunities both on and off campus. As a multi-instrumentalist specializing in jazz vibraphone, I play and have performance/educational experience in percussion, drum set, and keyboards.

Perhaps the moment my love for teaching and knowledge began was not in a music setting, but rather a Calculus class I took my first year. Dr Edgar not only came to every class enthusiastic, but always emphasized the WHY versus just the HOW, along with questioning. These are both qualities that not only directly apply to music tutoring, but still inspire me to learn and teach to this day. So often music teachers can just say to do this, or do that, but to me, that is only half the job. WHY is playing with less tension better? WHY is practicing slower better? It’s one thing to say it; it’s much more to explain the reasoning behind it. With this approach, concepts stick so much better because there is a reason behind it. This is exactly why learning music, in my opinion, is actually quite simple - it is all about building blocks upon those already built. It doesn’t matter how small the previous block of knowledge was - the importance is progress, and I am here to facilitate this growth!

In terms of educational experience, I currently teach keyboards and percussion at Berretta Music Academy in Clearwater, FL along with maintain a private studio of both online and in-person lessons. During college, I was the acting beginning band teacher at Visitation STEM Academy in Tacoma, WA along with being a Percussion Teaching Artist for the Student Orchestras of Greater Olympia the same year.

I'm so excited to work with you and help you achieve your goals! Please contact me through email or phone with any questions or concerns - I am here to help!

Composition (Music)

Composition (Music)

For my degree, I took a year of composition lab classes, where we wrote and worked with pieces of various genres each week. In terms of arranging, I have arranged a musical theater number, a percussion ensemble piece, and multiple songs for rock band/horns. Lastly, I composed and performed a percussion solo for my college's Composer's Forum.
Drums

Drums

I have experience teaching both private and group lessons on drum set and general percussion at various local music studios. I was also a substitute teacher for a college Percussion Lab course and beginning band teacher for a local elementary school. Lastly, I was a Drumline Clinician for an annual high school Band Camp. In terms of performance/education, I have performed on drum set in various settings (rock band, jazz combo, steel band) and have performed on orchestral percussion with the Olympia Symphony Orchestra.
Ear Training

Ear Training

As a Percussion Performance major, I took 4 semesters of general Ear Training where I received A's for each. Topics ranged from interval/chord recognition to four-part dictation. In my jazz lessons/study, I used and continue to use these skills every day, whether it be through transcription, learning a new song, or even through improvisation.
Music Theory

Music Theory

I have taken 4 years of college music theory classes, covering topics such as tonal harmony, musical form, and chord structure. I was also a TA for the entry level music theory class. As primarily a jazz musician, I specialize in analyzing jazz music of all periods. I employ both learning by ear training and sheet music in my study and teaching.
Piano

Piano

I began formal study of piano in college where as part of my music degree I passed 4 semesters of keyboarding. I currently teach keyboards at Berretta Music Academy in Clearwater, FL, maintaining a studio of 10+ students a week. I also play keyboards in a local jazz duo with singer/drummer Lee Farber, based out of St Petersburg, FL.
