Hello parents and students! My name is Owen, and I recently graduated summa cum laude from UCF with a Kinesiology B.S. - Exercise and Sport Physiology in three years. While studying for my degree, I also took prerequisite courses in the sciences for medical school. My unique approach to learning novel material and effective studying enabled me to achieve a 4.0 science GPA, score in the 85th percentile on my MCAT's chemistry and physics section, and score the highest in my class on the American Chemical Society examination for Organic Chemistry. I took courses like General Chemistry I and II, Organic Chemistry I and II, and Biochemistry—never finishing below 95%. I believe these accomplishments contributed to my acceptance for medical school, which I start in the fall of 2024!
Additionally, I have a semester of experience as a teaching assistant for Organic Chemistry I. I worked directly with students in the class who struggled with the worksheets and communicated with them outside the classroom on concepts. Further, I held tutoring sessions each week for students. I often found packed lecture halls an unproductive learning environment because you passively absorb information. Therefore, I always emphasized active learning, problem-solving, and constantly applying concepts to problem sets to strengthen neural pathways.
Ultimately, I want to take the same strategies that made me successful and apply them to students. I helped several individuals in the Organic Chemistry classroom go from failing the course the previous semester to achieving passing grades the next. There is no better feeling than helping a student achieve success!
