Bio

I have tutored math, computer science, and physics since 1997. I hold a B.S. in Mathematics with Honors and a B.A. in Physics with Honors from the University of Florida. I am currently finishing an M.S. in Artificial Intelligence (starting doctorate) at Johns Hopkins University. On the GRE (harder version of SAT for grad school) I scored 169 out of 170 on the quantitative section. I did funded research at NASA, Biophysical Society, Caltech, UF, and UNC.

I have ADHD and dyslexia and received many prestigious awards anyway. I was a CS3LD Scholar in UF's program for STEM students with learning disabilities, so if that is your student, I know the workarounds.

Most of my students are in high school or first two years of college. I have lectured SAT, ACT, GRE, and subject test prep classes and wrote course content. I have taught at many tutoring centers and picked up various cutting edge education science disciplines they hone in on. I was assistant center director at a Mathnasium center, training instructors and running the progress reporting. I cover elementary math through calculus, statistics, and high school and university physics and computer science.

I also mentor students on research and career planning, through Nova Scholar and independently. I have helped students publish, file patents, and win internships, scholarships and fellowships, taking a project from a rough question to something publishable and/or patentable.

Sessions start with a diagnostic. I watch you work through problems and lead you Socratically through obstacles, because the mistake is rarely where the student thinks it is. Lost points usually trace back to what they didn't realize they forgot from prior topics. Once I know the real gap, we drill it, and I send problem sets between sessions, as well as resources: videos, sites and games. Parents get reports after each session. My rate comes down for two-hour sessions and standing weekly blocks, so tell me your schedule and budget and I will tell you what I can do.

A very intelligent tutor

Joseph sounded like a very patient math tutor. He went out of his way on how to do an abstract algebra problem so I can finally flat out understand how to do the problem. A very intelligent tutor given not that many tutors are out there that tutor abstract algebra and that this math subject is one of the hardest classes I've ever took in my life.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Joe helped my son with high level topics and their application. He covered qualitative and some quantitative aspects of 1D discrete dynamical systems - how they relate to continuous systems (differential equations vs difference equations) - different forms of said systems and how to go between them - additive and multiplicative equations/sequences and how they amount to linear and exponential functions, respectively, fixed/equilibrium points (and limit cycle), and how to find them. Joe was prepared for the class and given it was the first session, he was very patient. Joe assessed my son's to knowledge of the subject and helped in the areas where my son needed more help.
