About David

Dear prospective students and parents,

I am a professional violinist and teacher. I have performed in many symphony orchestras in the U.S. including the Brevard Symphony and the Space Coast here in Florida. I also teach many other instruments including all the strings, recorder, autoharp, hammer dulcimer, glockenspiel etc.

I started violin at age six, and I've been teaching and performing ever since then. We had a string quartet in my family because my brother played cello, while sister Paula played viola and my sister Alice played 2nd violin.

Recently I have also began teaching music to children with autism. Music is excellent therapy for them. One of my students plays violin, one plays glockenspiel and three others play piano with me. Although my specialty and college degree is in music, I was an excellent student in other areas, which is why you might like to have me tutor English, math, or other subjects. I also like to teach fiddle music, bluegrass, folk.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ASVAB

I hold a bachelor degree from the University of Oregon. I have also been certified as a public school teacher in 5 states. I come from a military family and my father, brother, sister, grandfather, and multiple cousins, stepson have all served in the military.

Cello

I have Bachelor of Violin Performance and Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Oregon. I have performed and taught cello for over 20 years. I studied cello under Dr. Robert H., former national cello teacher of the year.

Clarinet

I hold a bachelor of music degree in violin performance, composition and music education from the University of Oregon. I hold state teaching certificates for several states and I taught music in public schools for over 7 years. One year I taught band and clarinet in South Dakota. Presently I teach privately and perform with the Boggy Creek Band.

Composition (Music)

One of my favorite arranging activities is to find midi files on the internet and to arrange them for the instruments the my students play. The software programs I use are noteworthy composer and tabledit.

I hold a Bachelor of music in composition from the University of Oregon. As part of my degree duties I presented a recital of my original compositions for voice, piano and string quartet. I find the computer is a tremendous new tool for arranging and composing.

Drums

I took percussion technics at the University of Oregon and later earned a bachelor of music degree. I'm especially interested in pitched percussion and frequently teach using a glockenspiel or orchestra bell set. I'm an alumna of the Space Coast Pops and currently perform in the Boggy Creek Band.

Ear Training

My ear training study began in elementary school with a program with Portland Parks on Saturdays. We did solfege, etc. It helped me develop a sense of perfect pitch which has proven invaluable for playing the violin and becoming a professional piano tuner. I hold a Bachelor of Violin performance and Bachelor of Music Education degrees from the University of Oregon.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold Bachelor of Violin Performance and Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Oregon. I find that most performers also teach. My music teaching degree certifies me to teach from K-12 as did my state teaching certificates. The older I get the more joy I receive from teaching very young and preschool children.

Flute

Flute techniques was a semester part of the curriculum to earning 3 Bachelor of Music degrees from the University of Oregon. I also play violin, piano and recorder. I specialize in folk styles.

French Horn

I hold a bachelor of music degree from the University of Oregon in Music education. I taught band in Timberlake South Dakota public schools and strings, general music, and choir or 7 years. I took French Horn Technics class in college.

General Music

Although I am primarily a violinist I hold a Bachelor of Music in music education degree from the University of Oregon. I continue to branch out and teach new instruments each year. I also teach autistic children. Music is great therapy for them.

Music History was a 2 year course at my college and I continue to study it as part of my teaching. Sometimes I wish I had become a musicologist because of questions I encounter teaching.

Phonics

I earned a Bachelor of Arts music education 1988 University of Oregon. I also have 7 years public school teacher. My certification in 5 states inclues Alaska. Additionally, I am a certified Suzuki music teacher. Plus, I took phonics for German language at Portland State University in Oregon as part of a German minor for college studies. The principles are the similar for English.

Sight Singing

I began sight singing in 1st grade with a class sponsored by the Portland Parks. We learned solfege and interval recognition. That helped me develop my sense of perfect pitch which I use daily as a piano tuner and violinist. I also continue to sing in many performing ensembles.

Trumpet

My grandfather played trumpet and his instrument is the one I'm playing today. I took brass technics at the University of Oregon, received a bachelor of music degree, and taught Band at Timberlake High School in South Dakota using that same trumpet.
