I have been a teacher most of my life. After graduating from college, I began my teaching career at a high school in Pennsylvania which lasted 36 years. I have been a teacher most of my life. After graduating from college, I began my teaching career at a high school in Pennsylvania which lasted 36 years. While teaching full time, I attended graduate school earning a Master of Science in mathematics. During those 36 years at a high school, I also taught part-time for a community college for 21 years. I also taught for several other colleges including Penn State. After retiring from my high school position, I moved to Florida and taught for 6 years at Valencia Community College. After 42 years in education, Brevard Community College offered me a couple of classes, so I decided to go into semi-retirement.

Although most of my teaching has been in the classroom, many of my years at the high school level included tutoring students who were unable to attend school for a variety of reasons. In some cases students were absent from school for an extended period of time. Even though the task was rather difficult, I experienced great satisfaction making it possible for those students to finish the school year or in all cases, graduate.

I have always enjoyed studying mathematics and would like to open a student's eyes to the beauty of mathematics and strive to instill in them the same enjoyment. Before coming to a tutoring session, I ask the student to tell me what topic or problem he or she wants to work on so that I can prepare examples and assemble the materials needed to have a successful session. Even though I have had an extensive study in mathematics, there have been times when I struggled, so I can identify with students and understand any frustration they may have.

Students who are having difficulty in mathematics need to get help before they feel that all is lost. It is better to get help early when just a little help goes a long way rather than waiting until the student feels that nothing is understood. In that case it is much more difficult and takes much longer to get back on track.

Patient tutor

Richard explains the concepts very well. He gives tips and shortcuts that make solving the problem easier. My sons feel he explains better than any other tutor they’ve had. He is clear and concise. Thanks to Richard they have their confidence back and they have ‘A’ averages once again. Now math is their favorite subject. They no longer get upset or discouraged when it’s time to work on math.

Good tutor but needs to review supplied materials.

The tutoring session was very good but there are some very important caveats that I must mention. Richard did not review the necessary materials of my class that were important for me to adhere to for proper credit and went as far as telling me that it was my responsibility to make sure he reviewed them. This was frustrating because the Wyzant functions did not work in chat. I would compare this to doing sign language in the dark. In the end, he did display patience and knowledge and but did not respect me as a student.
