Tutoring and helping others is so fulfilling for me, that I make every effort to offer a comfortable learning environment for my learners. As a professor at a local state college for the past ten years, I have taught English as a Second Language and tutored both adults and children in many subjects. (Many of my students asked me to tutor their children.) I now have my state clearances for the state of Florida and tutor elementary children for the school district.

Having lived in Mexico for a year, I am bilingual in Spanish. In addition to teaching English and Spanish via grammar, reading, writing, pronunciation, and accent-reduction, I have also tutored in math, science projects and for standardized tests, such as the CASAS, TABE, GED, SAT and TOEFL. Besides teaching, I facilitated students in their career development and counseled them in résumé preparation.

With an MBA and ten year's experience in corporate accounting, I can also tutor in business courses such as accounting and management, in addition to math and Microsoft Professional Office 2007 (MS-Certified). Public speaking is another area of my expertise having presented at several conferences.

Algebra 1

In addition to explaining pre-algebra to younger middle school students, I have taught older learners the more advanced concepts of Algebra 1 (to fulfill their high school requirements). I show my students examples until they feel confident that they understand the procedures, and then I ask them to explain to me how to solve problems using the proper algebraic steps. To give them confidence of their newly gained knowledge, I give them the opportunity to test their understanding with an app that confirms that their answer is correct or gives them steps to gain further insight in solving the problem.

Along with an MBA and an undergraduate degree in Accounting and QBA (Quantitative Business Analysis, I have over 10 years of experience in a corporate environment. As cash manager, I oversaw daily cash and communicated with bankers; prior to being promoted to manager, I analyzed accounts using Excel and made adjusting entries such as month-end and fiscal year-end journal entries in addition to journaling accruals. Once the financial reports were finalized following month-end, I met with department heads to critique the P&L.

Having received a bachelor's degree and later my graduate degree, I have substantial experience in how to navigate the various decisions and steps in applying for college. In addition to writing entrance essays for myself, I have assisted students in completing their own essays and getting into the universities of their choice. I have also tutored many students in studying for the SAT and the ACT to obtain the scores required for their preferred universities. Even more recently, I assisted my own daughter through the college application process after she graduated from an IB program and received a full scholarship to the college of her choice - in addition to the Bright Futures Scholarship - to supplement her grants we applied for through FAFSA.

I have tutored children in various subjects, including: reading comprehension, science projects, and Spanish. In addition, I have also assisted my young learners in understanding fractions, decimals, and basic math. Besides tutoring, I have taught 3-hour classes to elementary children in classes during summer youth camps at a community college. We discussed butterflies and other "bugs", and in an American Red Cross class, we discussed safety and health.

English is one of my favorite subjects. As an adjunct professor teaching English as a Second Language, I have become well-versed in grammar and language arts. Learning a second language myself required that I learn more about my native language of English.

As an adjunct professor at a state college, I have taught English as a Second Language (ESL) for over ten years. I have also tutored second-language learners from many countries, including Japan, Colombia, and Peru in English. I learned a second language, myself, so I can better understand the difficulties many of my students experience in learning English. In addition to teaching English grammar, reading, writing, pronunciation, and accent-reduction, I have also tutored learners to present standardized tests, such as the CASAS, TABE, GED, TESOL and others.

Having taught in an adult education department for many years, I have instructed GED subjects to many classes, including advanced ESL students. I am also bilingual in Spanish and can help those who have English as their second language. I have a great deal of experience in both English (reading comprehension and grammar) and math that will help in passing the GED.

Grammar is one of my specialties, especially in English. For many years now, I have taught English and the many rules we use in grammar, in addition to punctuation and capitalization. To help you remember the many rules, I explain why they exist. I will also provide many "tips and tricks" to help your memory in addition to activities to practice.

As an accountant for well over ten years, I have used electronic spreadsheets to analyze general ledger account balances. Now that I teach, I still use Excel quite often and am Microsoft-certified in Excel 2007.

I am Microsoft-Certified in MS-Outlook 2007, I can tutor you to use this e-mail and calendar software program. We will review how to manage scheduling your tasks and events in addition to sending the information via e-mails to those you wish to invite.
Needlework

Needlework

Crocheting became one of my favorite pastimes at an incredibly early age; by my early teens I was crocheting doilies and afghan throws. Some double-sided potholders with multiple-color patterns that I crocheted as a teen won awards at my local county fair. Later, as a young adult, I crocheted a complete baby set for a friend who had a baby. In addition to crocheting and dabbling in ribbon embroidery, I also completed some crewel projects and macrame, and now have my sights on amigurumi!

Since I teach and tutor in grammar and pronunciation, as well as spelling, I tend to review phonics a lot with my students. Knowing phonics substantially helps my students in their reading and spelling, and my ESL students in their pronunciation as well.

Reading

Reading comprehension is so important. It literally affects all other subjects; you have to understand what you are reading to know what to do - even in math - in word problems. I have a lot of experience in reading - especially as one of my favorite hobbies. Reading for understanding requires knowledge of a large vocabulary, reading between the lines, and idioms - just to name a few. With my knowledge of language arts: grammar, punctuation, etc., and my advanced understanding of the English language, I know many tips and tricks to share to enhance reading comprehension.

Sewing with my mother's Singer Sewing Machine as a young preteen was a challenge I enjoyed. I started out with simpler items, such as aprons and pillowcases. Before long, I was sewing skirts, baby clothes, and Halloween costumes. Now that I am an adult, I also delight in sewing projects that include combining material designs to fashion my own creations.

TOEFL

TOEFL

While teaching English as a Second Language at a local college, many of my students requested my assistance in preparing for the TOEFL. For the various sections of the test, I provide grammar details, so students can edit their writing and speaking. Also, to confirm their pronunciation is understandable, I ask students to text me a file of their speaking responses (to practice test prompts). For the words I have difficulty deciphering, I explain better pronunciation to my students; for example, the pronunciation of many words in American English changes based on the part of speech these words are functioning as in the specific sentence.
