In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

When I first had the opportunity to attend college, in 1989 when I was 33, I planned to become a Psychiatric Registered Nurse. After taking a poetry class, a gave up the seat I earned in SUNY Stony Brook’s School of Nursing and transferred to the English Department for Secondary Education. Once I started teaching I realized that I am a “Literary Historian”. There’s a certain aspect of literature which goes untouched without a clear understanding of the time it was written and history of the literature’s setting. So, though my certification is in English I taught out of my certification. I taught European and American History, as well as Global Studies.
With all of my teaching and business experience I am confident that I can be quite successful at tutoring Career Development. In fact, when I teach College Composition at Daytona State College, I assign each student to research and write a term paper about the career they believe most interests them. I know the importance of careful research and introspection in the process of Career Development.
I have extensive experience tutoring and substitute teaching in English/Language Arts in the elementary grades; in addition, I was a 7-9th grade Language Arts and Social Studies teacher. I was a long-term substitute English teacher at the high school grade levels. Within the past 18 years, I have tutored numerous students at the secondary level in English and Social Studies. Presently, I teach developmental writing at the pre-college level. I have also taught college composition. I have tutored ESOL students in all areas of English/Language Arts; I had worked with many of the student for a long period of time.
I am an experienced ESL/ESOL tutor. I have many years of success with students from many different countries. I have helped my students to improve their English writing, reading, speaking, and comprehension skills.
In college, I was an English major, and I excel in the analysis of prose and poetry. I easily gain insight into literature, and I enjoy the deconstruction process. I firmly believe that literature is a mirror to better understand ourselves and humanity. In addition to my passion for literature, I am equally passionate about history, for I am a Literary Historian. There is an aspect of literature that goes untouched without a clear understanding of the related history. Exploring literature is a magical journey and I am passionate about sharing my understandings with my students.
It is proven that an understanding of phonics helps children to read. By helping a student to develop phonemic awareness—the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate phonemes—I can teach the correspondence between the sounds and the spelling patterns that represent them. Phonics is a successful method for teaching reading and writing of the English language and I have extensive experience using phonics to teach students to read.
K through 6 substitute teaching experience, extensive experience tutoring at the elementary level, 2nd grade Montessori teacher beginning in the fall.
In college I took 4 sociology classes (16 credit hours) and earned a 4.0. An understanding of Sociology is needed to comprehend the norms of life. Sociology is a passion I have and I consistently study the subject.
I have helped my students at Daytona State College with their study skills class material. I offer assistance with their homework and with the writing of their term papers. I know the material covered in a study skills courses, and I can tutor a student who is taking this class or wishes to learn the skills needed to be a successful student.
