I am a certified New York State and Florida Public School Teacher who is eager to empower students with the skills needed to succeed in school and beyond. I am dedicated to enthusiastic and dynamic teaching as a means of creating and nurturing a lifelong love of knowledge in students. I seek out the gift in every student and value the privilege to work with them.

I hold a Masters Degree in Liberal Studies - with a History and English emphasis, a Bachelors Degree in English, and an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts - with a Social Science and Biology emphasis.

My teaching experience includes being an adjunct English teacher of Developmental Writing and Reading at Daytona State College - 2009 to 2014 and rehired 2017 to present. In-between my time at DSC, I was a second grade teacher at a private hybrid-Montessori elementary school - 2015-2016. In addition, I have been a substitute teacher at Father Lopez High School. I also have multiple years of full-time experience teaching both English and Social Studies. Throughout the years, I substitute taught in numerous county school districts where I have had experience with students from grades K-12. In addition, I have been a private tutor since 1992. I tutor in all subjects at the elementary level. For middle school, high school and college level students I have experience tutoring English – writing, reading, literary and poetry analysis, the writing of research and term papers; as well as tutoring in study skills development, the social sciences (psychology, sociology, philosophy), history, and junior college level biology. I would be very happy to provide my detailed work record for review.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I taught American history for three school years in Bethel Elementary, Bethel, North Carolina, and Rondout Valley High School, Accord, New York. I very much enjoy the subject. I am a voracious reader of non-fiction books on American History topics. I also make it a point to watch American History documentaries. I'm dedicated to continue learning about the subject, and I share my interest with my students.

Career Development

At Daytona State College I help my students to explore careers they are interested in pursuing. I show them how to use the many resources available through the school's programs, as well as through government and county employment internet sites. It's critical for a student to have direction and not waste money and time and money floundering through courses which in the end will not apply to their degree.

Elementary Math

During the school year of 2015-2016 I taught a second grade class. The class was in a private school and it was a hybrid Montessori and core standard class. I taught the students material from first to fifth grade because in the classroom there were students at various grade levels.

English

I have extensive experience tutoring and substitute teaching in English/Language Arts in the elementary grades; in addition, I was a 7-9th grade Language Arts and Social Studies teacher. I was a long-term substitute English teacher at the high school grade levels. Within the past 18 years, I have tutored numerous students at the secondary level in English and Social Studies. Presently, I teach developmental writing at the pre-college level. I have also taught college composition. I have tutored ESOL students in all areas of English/Language Arts; I had worked with many of the student for a long period of time.

ESL/ESOL

I am an experienced ESL/ESOL tutor. I have many years of success with students from many different countries. I have helped my students to improve their English writing, reading, speaking, and comprehension skills.

European History

European history is an interesting subject which I have spent years studying privately. When I was in college I took a class on European history and that started me on a lifetime Journey to learn as much as I can about the Region's history.

Geography

Knowing Geography is critical to understanding ourselves and our world. Geography isn't taught to the extent that it needs to be in the school system. I find geography fascinating and just recently I ordered it a Human Geography class to know more about that subject.

Grammar

Presently I am teaching developmental English and an understanding of grandma is the essence of this class. I often tutor students who speak another language and Grammar comprehension is critical to grasping a new language. Throughout the years I have become a grammarian which should be expected of an English teacher.

Literature

In college, I was an English major, and I excel in the analysis of prose and poetry. I easily gain insight into literature, and I enjoy the deconstruction process. I firmly believe that literature is a mirror to better understand ourselves and humanity. In addition to my passion for literature, I am equally passionate about history, for I am a Literary Historian. There is an aspect of literature that goes untouched without a clear understanding of the related history. Exploring literature is a magical journey and I am passionate about sharing my understandings with my students.

Philosophy

What came first the akon or the tree? That was the first question my professor asked in my first philosophy class. Philosophy leads to questioning, and questioning leads to acquiring knowledge. Once we analyze that knowledge, and we're able to teach it to another, then we've reached a point of understanding.

Phonics

It is proven that an understanding of phonics helps children to read. By helping a student to develop phonemic awareness—the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate phonemes—I can teach the correspondence between the sounds and the spelling patterns that represent them. Phonics is a successful method for teaching reading and writing of the English language and I have extensive experience using phonics to teach students to read.

Proofreading

As a teacher of Developmental writing, I must know how to proofread. I have spent uncountable hours reading papers. My job is to teach my students to proofread their work and help them understand their errors. Proofreading is a major part of my life, and I have taught numerous students how to proofread.

Psychology

In college I took 18 credits in psychology. After college I dug deeper into various psychological disorders. I wanted to understand mental illness and through 20 + years of studies I am informed on the subject.

Reading

I have taught reading throughout my profession as an English teacher. Even when I substitute teach reading skills are critical a part of language art's lessons. I have experience as a K through 12 substitute teacher, extensive experience tutoring at the elementary level to college level, one year of classroom experience as a 2nd grade Montessori teacher, 8 years experience as a 7th through 12th grade classroom teacher, and 5 years experience as a adjunct instructor teaching developmental writing and reading. I feel confident in my ability to teach reading.

SAT Reading

I have tutored numerous students who were preparing for the SAT writing and reading portion. I also tutored students who were preparing for the MCAT. I understand what is needed to succeed in both the reading and writing portion of the SAT.

SAT Writing

I have tutored numerous students who were preparing for the SAT writing and reading portion. I also tutored students who were preparing for the MCAT. I understand what is needed to succeed in both the reading and writing portion of the SAT.

Social Studies

I received a well rounded education. Post graduate I taught and tutored Social Studies material, so I continued researching information on the varied subject which fall under the Social Studies broad spectrum umbrella. Basic secondary Social Studies consist of topics in history, government, economics, civics, sociology, geography, and anthropology. One can look at all of these topics and feel confused, but I know how to break it all down and make it all understandable and interesting. I am a certified New York State and Florida Public School Teacher.

Sociology

In college I took 4 sociology classes (16 credit hours) and earned a 4.0. An understanding of Sociology is needed to comprehend the norms of life. Sociology is a passion I have and I consistently study the subject.

Study Skills

I have helped my students at Daytona State College with their study skills class material. I offer assistance with their homework and with the writing of their term papers. I know the material covered in a study skills courses, and I can tutor a student who is taking this class or wishes to learn the skills needed to be a successful student.

Vocabulary

Part of being a language arts teacher is to help students acquire the needed vocabulary to succeed in life, whether going on to University or into Corporate America. The way we speak affects the way others see us. A developed vocabulary will help a students prepare for standardized test as well as life.

Writing

I am a Developmental Writing I & II Adjunct Instructor at Daytona State College. I have been an English Adjunct Instructor since January of 2009, and I have had great success teaching my students the writing and grammar skills they need to succeed as college students.
