When I was growing up, I often tutored my peers in a variety of subjects. I seemed to have a gift for explaining things in different ways to help people with different learning styles understand concepts they found difficult. I have continued tutoring as an adult, and while I have tutored in a variety of subjects, math is my niche, the area in which I experience the greatest fulfillment as a tutor.
While my students have been on many grade levels, from elementary school through college, all my math tutoring students over the last six years have been middle school and high school students. Because algebra is foundational to higher-level math, I have been working primarily with pre-algebra and algebra students to make sure they have a solid understanding of concepts they will need as they progress. One of my recent successes involved two middle school algebra students who, although they both had an A in the class, realized they would not be able to pass the end-of-course exam because their teacher had been curving test scores by over 20 points all year. They reached out to me about a month before the test, and we worked together to make sure that they could both pass the exam and have the necessary math skills they needed through high school and college.
As a tutor, I recognize the importance of having a good rapport with students. I strive to make my tutoring sessions a fun setting in which to learn. I also make sure to teach in a way that accommodates each student's learning style. Whether I am helping with homework or test preparation, filling in knowledge gaps, or just helping a student with a difficult concept, my goal is give each student strategies they can use to succeed.
