Hi, I’m Amit! I am currently a university student majoring in Mathematics. I’ve tutored math for 5 years now in many different settings with all kinds of students. Through my experiences, I have often found that students struggle in math because their schools prioritize their grades over their understanding of the content. Mastery of prior topics is essential for mastery of later topics; unfortunately, students do not all have the same background and flexibility with the math concepts or logical skills that may be required for a course or exam. Even worse, if a student struggles with one concept, they are often not given the time or attention they need to progress past it, causing a snowball effect that makes math even more challenging as their high school career progresses.
For these reasons, math educators need to be very aware of their students’ abilities and prior knowledge. As an educator, I hope to bring something new to the table that can change the way students approach their math courses and exams. I ensure that all my students will develop an understanding of basic logical principles and how they are key to the comprehension and application of mathematical concepts. I actively try and predict when and where students will become confused and fill in the gaps before misunderstandings arise.
I have worked at both after-school tutoring institutions, such as Sylvan Learning Center, and with students one-on-one at homes, libraries, coffee shops, and over video calls. My study of math in college has provided me with a much deeper understanding of it, both computationally and theoretically. I am most proficient in teaching pure mathematics, such as algebra, calculus, and geometry, but I do also have experience teaching applied math fields like statistics.
