After graduating from college as an English major, I taught middle school RELA (Reading/ English Language Arts). I quickly realized that I lacked the necessary skills to teach students how to read, so I returned to school, obtained a masters in reading, and was armed with the skills to teach struggling students how to succeed at reading- a boost to their self-confidence. I became a reading specialist and eventually a literacy coach teaching teachers how to use high impact reading lessons in all content areas.

At the college level I taught Critical Thinking and Academic Writing for freshmen. I am also experienced prepping students and adults for standardized exams, college applications, scholarship essays, and I excel at teaching grammar. I have taught overseas and have experience working with students who recently exited ESOL and still need support. I also help students with study skills and organization and other necessary executive functioning skills.

I love to help students make the correlation between what they are learning in school and how to apply that to this complex digital world. We can work together to develop some academic goals and establish strategies to accomplish them. I can be easily reached, and we can decide on a schedule that works best. I'm looking forward to working with you. Contact me with any additional questions or to set up a lesson in person or online.

Approved Subjects

African American Studies

African American Studies

I took over 15 hours of African and African American studies coursework in college including history, literature, religions, and other relevant social science coursework. I have continued to stay relevant by reading and researching topics related to this area of study. I developed and taught a course at the college called Food and Social Justice that addressed the injustices around food availability specifically in African American communities. I have included African and African American authors in all of my courses to offer variety and cultivate an appreciation for new voices.
English

English

I taught high school English and English composition for college freshman.
Grammar

Grammar

I majored in English and use grammar to edit documents.
Literature

Literature

I’ve taught 10th grade literature & tutored it as well. I was an English Literature major in college.
Reading

Reading

I have taught middle school reading & language arts, I’m a reading specialist & have worked extensively with struggling readers & second language learners.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

As an English teacher, I teach vocabulary in isolation and in context. I help students understand the difference between learning a new word for a previously known concept, maybe just changing degrees for example, and learning an entirely new concept. I teach them the root, prefixes, or suffix of the word and sometimes the origin. I help them to see some words as puzzles and identify the part that is familiar and can help them make meaning or decipher a gist. I also teach them the importance of knowing your audience to determine when a particular word is appropriate and having multiple words in their toolbox from which to select.
Writing

Writing

I have taught English composition and I freelance edit so I am able to spot grammatical mistakes in writing & explain why they are wrong & how to correct them.

Glad To Have Found Her!

It’s time to transition to High School and with it looking for a new tutor. I found Jacqueline while searching for a 9th Grade English Literature tutor. Wyzant has been a gold mine for us when looking for Tutors! She was so refreshing in her approach in getting to know my Granddaughter/her new student. Just like the title says “Glad To Have Found Her!”
