Japanese is FUN!

Even learning the kanji can be fun using my unique mnemonic method.

I enjoy helping learners and giving them advice whether they are able to take regular lessons or not. So please contact me!
I am here to help as much or as little as you need: whether its an infrequent lesson to supplement self-study, a one time lesson for specific advice and a point in the right direction, or an email with questions about Japanese and Japanese learning resources.

I am here to help as much or as little as you need: whether its an infrequent lesson to supplement self-study, a one time lesson for specific advice and a point in the right direction, or an email with questions about Japanese and Japanese learning resources.

Struggling with your Japanese class?

You can improve in class using the innovative methods I can teach you (methods your teacher doesn't use or doesn't have time one-on-one to help you with).

Struggling to pass kanji tests?

If you are struggling with kanji my methods can help you learn kanji in an easier, fun, and much more memorable way!
We can look over your kanji list from class together and I can help you learn how to memorize them (without horrible methods like writing them 100 times).

I am a non-Japanese, Japanese tutor.
Having learned the language myself I can give you insight into the language and learning it that a native Japanese speaker cannot. I have been in your shoes, have been where you want to go, and can help you get there.

I took four years of Japanese in High School (my senior class was taught by a non-Japanese Japanese teacher, my best Japanese teacher ever) and passed the AP Japanese test. I took Japanese at University of Miami and went on student exchange for one year to Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan. I transferred to Sophia University and graduated from there with a bachelors in International Business. While there I took their intensive Japanese and Advanced Japanese courses, and then took a portion of my regular coursework in Japanese.

I have extensive tutoring/teaching experience:
I started with 1.5 years tutoring English in Tokyo.
Back in the U.S. I worked teaching Japanese part-time to high school students at a small private school called "Space of Mind" in Delray Beach.

More recently I leveraged my background in business and Japanese to work for an online Japanese company as an instructor assisting Japanese business professionals to prepare for job interviews, business trips, presentations to foreign business partners, marketing campaigns, etc.
It was a job I could work from anywhere and my wife and I took advantage of it to live in different places in the U.S. and afterword in different parts of China.

Later, in China, I worked for ECJTU university as a business professor (teaching corporate strategy and business English).
All these teaching positions were part-time while my main work was running my small web development company.

My day job is still Web Development but my fun job is tutoring Japanese! :-)

In 2012 I took a seminar in Texas for Accelerated Language Teaching Methods that covered the methods used by the Canadian Institute of English (CIE). I use these methods (including Audio-lingual method & Total Physical Response) in my LIVELY tutoring sessions.

In 2014 while teaching high school Japanese I started developing the Kanji learning method that I use in tutoring today.

In the past I worked with the language school Lingua in Broward County and other community class organizations to offer local group lessons. And I also taught local lessons through Wyzant. But with local demand in Florida for Japanese being pretty low I now only provide online tutoring, with a focus on helping students taking Japanese classes in school.

I hope I can help you too.

Whatever form they take, I hope you enjoy your Japanese studies!
And I look forward to teaching you how to learn Japanese and give you motivation to go to Japan!

Yoroshiku!

Enthusiastic and knowledgeable

It is amazing what you can learn when you have a person who is both enthusiastic and knowledgeable teaching you. Tori is certainly both of those things. I enjoyed my first lesson immensely and left it feeling confident and very excited about my next lesson.
