Hi! I'm Patty. After homeschooling my four children I graduated magna cum laude from Clearwater Christian College with a BS in General studies, a minor in Bible, and concentrations in education and social studies. My 13 years in the classroom have been spent in K-8th grade as a classroom lead teacher and Reading Specialist. I have tutored individual students and small groups throughout my teaching career.

Having written my senior thesis comparing math education in the U.S. and Japan, I am convinced that conceptual understanding is vital to the success of math students. Clear understanding enables students to build the solid foundation necessary for continued achievement in math. Because of this viewpoint, I make continual use of manipulatives and illustrations to ensure that students comprehend the concepts being taught in their math lessons.

Perhaps because I was one of the oldest students in my own first-grade class, and the only student who had not attended kindergarten (thus the only non-reader in the group), I have a clear recollection of learning to read through a phonics approach. This first-person experience has proven very helpful as I have sought to help students "break the code" and become full-fledged readers. I am aware of the typical misconceptions and misunderstandings and can guide students to success in reading - both in the mechanics of decoding and in the more advanced skills of comprehension.

As a teacher, I understand that it is imperative for children to have a good experience with academics in order to instill a desire for life-long learning. I have personally observed the damage that can occur to a student's motivation when he/she is treated like a 'number' and 'lost in the crowd'. Individualized attention with a tailored study plan to match each student's abilities and needs is my recipe for success.

Handwriting

Good handwriting habits include using a proper grip, placing the paper at a 45 degree angle, beginning each letter at the proper place, and always working left to right. I teach students to write beautifully, and to be proud of their good work, as valuable training in both work ethic and reading. Looking forward to the next lesson.

Ms. Patty has been teaching my son how to read since the first lesson on August 9, 2023. I can't believe she has been teaching him for over two years. Ever since the first lesson, my son has been seeing Ms. Patty 2 to 3 times a week on an ongoing basis. My son has made a lot of progress with reading as well as comprehending it. My son has special needs; I feel it is important to let the reader know. My son is now reading at a 2.0 level, which represents significant progress since he didn't know how to read before starting lessons with Ms. Patty. My Patty is a master teacher who is very patient, professional, and thoughtful because she puts a lot of planning into each lesson for my son, making reading fun. Her lessons are never boring, and my son looks forward to every lesson with Ms. Patty.

The anniversary of my son’s first lesson was August 2023

Ms. Patty has been teaching my son reading for almost 2 years; the anniversary of my son's first lesson was August 2023. He has been having 1 to 3 lessons per week. My son is an adult on the autism spectrum who never learned how to read while in special education school. I regret not finding out he didn't know how to read until the pandemic. He was out of school for over a year, so I was home no longer working and took off a year and realized the school program never taught him how to read. I attempted to teach him myself, but I was unsuccessful due to my lack of expertise in teaching reading. I began researching online, discovered the Wyzant app, and found many available tutors. I took my time to read various tutors' profiles, and when I came across Ms. Patty’s profile, I was impressed by her background in teaching reading. I booked Ms. Patty for my son, and she was a perfect fit because he responds well to her teaching methods, and she knows how to get my son to think, read, and understand what he is reading. My son looks forward to every session during the week with Ms. Patty. I informed Ms. Patty that my son needs to have about three sessions a week with her because she makes learning enjoyable. Additionally, as my son's father, I have learned a great deal from Ms. Patty, and I benefit from each lesson because I am acquiring strategies to teach my son how to read, thanks to her passion and love for teaching. Every lesson with Ms. Patty is well-organized, clear, and fun. She is patient; she is a master teacher who is a gift to every parent who dreams of having a teacher who makes their kids happy, smile, and eager to learn to reach their highest potential. My son's ability to read and comprehend what he is reading is getting better with every session.
