Hello students and families! My name is Joni S., and my family moved to Palm Coast in 2003. Since then, I have been a substitute teacher and active volunteer in Flagler County Schools. I am the ESE/Language Arts teacher at Hinson Middle School (Volusia County) and was previously an ESE middle school teacher (Math & Science) and Business Education/Career Planning educator in St. John's County. I hold a State of Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) Educator's Certificate in Business Education and in Exceptional Student Education (ESE). Previously, I held an FLDOE "Statement of Eligibility" for Middle Grades Integrated Curriculum (all subjects in grades 5-9).
My husband is a fitness buff and avid bicyclist. My older daughter graduated from Matanzas High School (MHS) in 2013 and took advantage of the "Dual Enrollment" program to earn her Associates degree from Daytona State College while in high school. She recently earned her Bachelor's degree from Valdosta State University (GA) and is an "Interpreter for the Deaf" (ASL-English). My younger daughter graduated MHS in May 2015, where she was a straight-A honor student and a very successful MHS athlete. She is a UNF Osprey -- pursuing a degree in Mathematics with a minor in Education. I am happy to share information about the schools to help families navigate the process!
I am committed to student success and helping each individual. I believe that all students learn differently, and a key to academic achievement is "learning how to learn"! My other strengths include organizational skills and time management, which also contribute to student success. I am proud of relationships I have with our young adults, families, and school staff and of my reputation of always putting the kids first! Hello students and families! Not only can Joni teach, she can relate to your individual learning needs. She has tutored my teenager for past 6 months and has her passing two major tests we couldn't seem to get passed with other tutors. I can't speak highly enough about her techniques and professionalism. -Thankful Mom.
Joni appears to be a great tutor. She is very energetic; obviously loves education and truly enjoys the student. She has a great sense of humor but also takes learning seriously. She is interested in finding out my child's learning style and his interests. I believe she will be a wonderful addition to my child's school year. I'm excited to see how he will do this school year. More importantly, my children like her! I think she's great!
Joni has been working with my son now for 3 weeks and there is such a difference in his attitude toward school, homework in general and just his willingness to try hard and do his best. She has developed a wonderful rapport with him and is truly a blessing to him and to me because I don't have to get into the old battles over the undone homework and staying on top of his subjects. Joni is wonderful!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I teach Business Education/Career Planning at a Youth Academy in St. John's County (Florida) which is a DJJ residential facility housing about 110 male teens. Also, I hold a Florida DOE certification in Business Education 6-12.
I have a very strong understanding of how young adults (primarily grades 5-12) learn and ultimately succeed, and I believe there are several key strategies they can use. Specifically, I can help students get organized -- in terms of keeping track of assignments, organizing papers, and getting a handle on time management. I also help them address distractions and how to stay focused. Lastly, I can help them identify their learning style so they utilize studying methods that work for them.
