Whatever your or your student's plans are, it is my joy to help you get there! I have 40+ years of experience teaching and tutoring all levels of mathematics students from elementary through college as well as test prep (SAT, ACT, GED, ASVAB, and college entrance), and have worked with private, public, and homeschooled families. I tailor my approach to meet the varied needs of each student whether it be learning styles, working with special needs, or challenging the gifted. From experience, I have found that a multi-faceted approach to problem-solving and retention works best. As part of each session, I love to include mental math tips and have numerous cool manipulatives that we often use when meeting in person.
Most students called tutors because they wanted to either 'get past the math' or needed to 'maximize their grades' to get where they wanted to go. It is my joy and honor to have helped students who are now successful doctors, accountants, musicians, military personnel, teachers, and more. I have a B.A. in mathematics (summa cum laude) from Mt. St. Mary College where I earned the mathematics student of the year award, tutored peers, and taught programming to teachers through the NSF. I have passed the Praxis Exam for K-12 Mathematics, created classes for homeschool coops, worked in public schools, and continued to study mathematics and education for over 40 years.
Personal note: My husband and I homeschooled all four of our own children K-12 and saw them all graduate from college with honors, including a son who is a USAF grad and currently a Lt. Col. in the USAF. Our approach was very hands-on, cultivating a love of learning, and mastery. That is, we fully learned one topic before moving on to the next. We discovered that being successful each step of the way not only builds strong educational foundations but also confident young people ready to take on the world!

ACT Math

ACT Math

The mathematics portion of the ACT exam includes 60 questions to be completed in 60 minutes and is designed to measure the mathematical skills students have typically acquired by the end of 11th grade. I have found with my students that they have increased their scores by being prepared for the types of questions asked, understanding the layout of the test, and strenthening their problem solving skills. Typically, I will review a practice exam first to evaluate the student's needs and tailor instruction accordingly.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

For many students the change from lower level arithmetic based math to the upper levels of more reasoning based math is a difficult. I have seen many students make remarkable progress once they learned the skills needed to 'understand' how to master Algebra. It is one of my very favorite subjects to teach because with tutoring, a student's specific learning style can be catered to, and mathematical thinking often becomes enjoyable again!
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

For many students the change from lower level arithmetic based math to the upper levels of more reasoning based math is a difficult. I have seen many students make remarkable progress once they learned the skills needed to 'understand' how to master Algebra. Algebra II is very key to scoring well on the SAT, ACT and other college level math courses. Many students I have worked with have even scored well in geometry (spacial intelligence) and then struggled with Algebra II (logic and abstract thinking skills) and wondered why? It is important to understand that very different learning styles are required for each. With tutoring, a student's specific skill set can be maximized and often remarkable progress made!
ASVAB

ASVAB

It is my honor and my joy to prepare young men and women for the military. My own son is currently serving in the United States Air Force in security forces and is an Academy grad, and many of my family and friends are either serving or are veterans as well. I have helped many wonderful candidates pass the ASVAB and improve their scores in order to qualify for their preferred career paths. It is usually the mathematics that trips most students up, especially since calculators are not allowed on the test. However, with practice it is totally possible to do well. The test is very predictable as far as content, and so my approach is to maximize each student's strengths and to provide support specific to their weaknesses. If you are considering the honorable career of service to our military, please don't let the ASVAB stop you! I will gladly offer a 10% discount to ASVAB students upon request.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

In elementary school our children face the sometimes daunting task of mastering many subjects, including reading and math, simultaneously in a diverse classroom. Each child brings a unique mix of gifts, gaps, and experience to the task. The methodologies used in schools differs just as widely as does the approaches of the individual teachers who may or may not view math as their strength. Some children just find themselves overwhelmed with the task of mastering basic elementary math. However, I have yet to find a student who one way or another could not learn and truly enjoy the fascinating world of mathematics. My approach is extremely tailored to each student, but as often as possible I use hands on learning and fun tricks of the trade to make math come alive. It is vital to come along side of what is being taught in the classroom and give students, parents and teachers the aid they need.
GED

GED

While only comprising a portion of the test, the mathematics section of the GED exam can be the most daunting to many test takers. However, the skills needed to pass do not go beyond average high school level mathematics, and can be mastered by most with a bit of intentional review and practice. I have found that teaching students to understand and recognize the wording and types of questions asked on tests, as well as tricks and strategies for tackling them, quickly gives test takers the advantage they need to succeed. Students will need to demonstrate understanding of mathematical concepts as well as the ability to apply problem solving skills to real life examples. Topics covered in tutoring sessions can be tailored to the student's specific needs and include any or all of those found on the test: Numbers & Operations, Geometry & Measurement, Data Analysis, Probability, Statistics, Algebra, Functions and Patterns. Use of a Casio fx260 calculator is provided for the first portion of the test, while no calculator is allowed for the second portion, therefore both methods of problem solving can be covered in tutoring sessions.
Geometry

Geometry

I have seen many students make remarkable progress once they learned the skills needed to 'understand' how to master Geometry and more visual based thinking. I enjoy making the ideas come alive and help my students with applications and hands on thinking. Many students I have worked with have even scored well in freshman Algebra (usually linear and rules based thinking) and then struggled with Geometry (spacial intelligence) and wondered why? It is important to understand that very different learning styles are required for each. With tutoring, a student's specific skill set can be maximized and often remarkable progress made!
GRE

GRE

Ready to take the GRE? I always have my students begin with a practice test! The test itself is set up very differently than most tests they've ever taken. However, it is one of the easiest tests to make great improvements on with targeted practice. In order to approach studying for the GRE effectively, I usually begin with analyzing a student's practice test to first identify each student's specific gaps to work on, as well as to maximize their strengths. I have seen my students make significant progress on their GRE scores by learning how to tackle the test more effectively, learning skills specific to the test (especially in the math portion), and reviewing areas that they have not looked at since high school years!
Homeschool

Homeschool

I personally and successfully homeschooled all four of my own children from preschool through high school. All of them started college when they were 15 or 16 years old and went on to graduate from great universities with top honors. My oldest son graduated from the Air Force Academy, went on to gain a masters degree, and is now a Major in the USAF. I have tutored many homeschool children throughout the years working alongside of parents to enable them to continue homeschooling when the 'math' was too hard for them to teach. Also, I specialize in elementary level phonics/reading and successfully work with The Logic of English phonics curriculum (or other resources as needed). About 16 years ago I designed and taught once a week mathematics courses for a homeschool co-op using Saxon math (back when my own children were in high school). This enabled me to develop a plan to teach content in a weekly 1-2 hour session and rely on parents to oversee daily 'homework' assignments.
Microsoft Outlook

Microsoft Outlook

Microsoft Outlook is my own preferred tool for organizing emails, calendar, contacts and tasks. I have 10+ years experience as an executive assistant to high level leadership in both the financial sector and large non-profit organizations utilizing outlook to manage international schedules for corporate presidents and vice-presidents. I have also trained other staff in Microsoft Office applications and was often the 'go to' person in the office for questions.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Pre-Algebra skills have now been incorporated into many of the core curriculum for even the elementary school years. However, from the 5th or 6th grade through about the 8th grade, pre-algebra brings the child from the world of 'arithmetic' and the basics into the formal thinking skills of upper level mathematics. It is the time when any gaps (such as fractions or division) need to be filled. The good news is that this is a fantastic time when given a chance students can hone their skills and really begin to understand the application of math. My approach is to come behind what is being learned in the classroom, and build solid understanding - not just the rules. Hands on manipulatives and examples make learning fun and retention rise. I highly recommend giving your student every chance to build a solid foundation at this level!

Excellent!

Tracey tutored my daughter in SAT Math as well as SAT Writing and I couldn't have been more pleased. She is dedicated, patient, and wonderful with her students. My daughter was at ease with her right off the bat and got so much out of each lesson. I would HIGHLY recommend Tracey to anyone looking for a math or English tutor. I plan on utilizing her services in the near future for our 15 year old son.

Tracy is tutoring me in geometry. She is helping me get back on track. I have had other tutors before and they seem to do the work for me as Tracy has me solve the problem and shows me the correct way.

My daughter really likes Tracy. She can explain very well and did a very good job. Tracy can also try hard to work out her schedule upon short notice. My daughter will be with her for many years to come. We are so glad we got a good tutor eventually.
