Hi students!

My name is Lauren and I have a Ph.D. in Molecular Microbiology and a B.S. in Animal Sciences with a background in chemistry. I completed a postdoctoral fellowship at UC Irvine studying the cell biology of Chlamydia trachomatis. My research relied on core molecular biology techniques including PCR, RNA sequencing, gene expression analysis, and mutagenesis, giving me deep, hands-on knowledge of biology, microbiology, molecular biology, and genetics from the undergraduate through graduate level.

Teaching and mentoring have been constants throughout my career! During my Ph.D., I mentored undergraduates in the lab, helping them design experiments, troubleshoot results, and build confidence in their reasoning. During my postdoc, I graduated my own master's student and closely guided three Ph.D. students through coursework, experimental design, and data analysis. I've also spent years presenting complex research to audiences ranging from scientific conferences to people with no science background, and consistently heard that I have a gift for breaking down difficult concepts clearly and engagingly. That skill is the same one I bring to tutoring.

After my postdoc, I worked in industry supporting researchers using next-generation sequencing technologies, walking customers of all experience levels, from undergraduates to senior faculty, through complex protocols and data interpretation one-on-one. This sharpened my ability to meet a learner where they are and adjust my explanations in real time. Combined with my research and mentoring background, I'm well prepared to tutor biology, molecular biology, microbiology, and genetics!

Approved Subjects

Biology

Biology

I hold a Ph.D. in Molecular Microbiology from Virginia Tech and a B.S. in Animal and Poultry Sciences, giving me a strong foundation across cell biology, genetics, physiology, and microbiology. My research career spanned bacterial pathogenesis, animal infection models, and eukaryotic cell biology, using techniques like PCR, gene expression analysis, and microscopy to study how organisms function at the molecular level. I've spent years translating complex biological concepts for audiences ranging from graduate students to people with no science background at all, and I enjoy helping students build a genuine, intuitive understanding of biology rather than just memorizing terms.
Microbiology

Microbiology

I earned my Ph.D. in Molecular Microbiology from Virginia Tech, where I spent five years studying the bacterium Brucella, including its genetics and how it survives and causes disease inside a host. My research relied on core microbiology techniques like mutagenesis, bacterial culture, and animal infection models, and I later expanded into microscopy and cell biology studying Chlamydia trachomatis as a postdoctoral fellow at UC Irvine. I've published multiple first-author papers on bacterial pathogenesis and have years of experience explaining microbiology clearly to both students and non-scientists, making me well suited to teach everything from basic bacterial structure to advanced pathogenesis and molecular genetics.
