Bio

In addition to teaching 9 years in the high school setting (Chemistry, Biochemistry, Earth Science, Biology, Algebra I and II etc.) I also possess MANY years of practical industrial chemistry experience. I am aware of the skills that today's employers seek. I am a former medic, firefighter, CPR instructor and am capable of positive interaction with a wide array of skillsets. I feel EVERYONE is capable of being educated.

I am proud to be an educator in science and mathematics, but I harbor few illusions that the basic tenets and arcane ideologies of math and science might be retained by most students. I wish to educate through "power of example" -- using math and science concepts as a "road map" to practical problem solving skills. I value the role of facilitator in a student's learning process. I strive to be the best role model possible.

In Webster's Dictionary, "teach" is "to instruct in one's profession" while educate is to "form or develop the character/skill/mind". I strive to be an educator, in the true sense of the word.

Organic Chemistry

Organic Chemistry

I possess a BS degree in Chemistry and almost a Master's in Analytical Chemistry. I have 20+ years laboratory experience with some of that amassed in the pharmaceutical and environmental fields. I have extensive ability to write methods for some very complicated analytical equipment (GC-MS; HPLC; TGA; DSC to name a few). To be successful in writing methods to analyze organic compounds one must have a vast understanding of organic chemistry.
Pharmacology

Pharmacology

I was an active medic on ambulance services in several services in MA. and CT for almost 15 years. Additionally, I have taken coursework in phlebotomy, anatomy and physiology, biochemistry as well as MANY continuing education courses in pharmacology as it relates to emergency medicine. Additionally, as a chemist (who has also taught biology at the high school level) I have a very solid foundation in the math required for dosage calculations.

She is great!

My son really likes her and he is hard to please. So kudos to her for that! She is knowledgeable and patient. She's a teacher and knows how to deal with teenagers.

Great first visit!

Karen connected with my granddaughter in a way that enabled her to understand the material in a "real world" way. My hope is that my granddaughter will continue to integrate Karen's method into the classroom environment.
