I have two daughters with dyslexia, which drove me to learn a new methodology to teach students and have seen such results with the OG and UFLI strategies.
I focus on a multisensory, explicit, and systematic approach to reading and writing using the OG and UFLI methods. I always do an initial assessment to help me focus on where I need to close the reading deficiency gaps.
I do not want students to learn to memorize. It does drive students crazy when we do nonsense words, but it helps them to be able to feel more confident with their learning and be able to explain new concepts.
While we learn in an explicit, systematic, and multisensory way, we also focus on irregular words and why they may be irregular words and why we must learn to memorize them. We also look at strategies to help them outside of tutoring.
