My goal as a certified K6-12 English teacher and college instructor is to help students become confident in their success. This may come by helping students with writing coursework (college or high school), navigating college applications, reviewing college application essays, writing scholarship essays, organizing content, and/or study skills.

Using my own experience with curriculum development, I designed a framework for writing college application essays that takes the stress away from starting and offers a clear guide to develop students’ unique stories. In addition, working with me for your college application comes with my college organizer: helping students choose the right college for them, know what they need clearly from each school, and grow their activity list in an easy to navigate document.

I have my MA in Writing and Rhetoric and BA in English Education, hold gifted and ESOL endorsements, am certified as an online instructor, and currently teach First Year Composition at an online university and Writing Skills for law students. I also have a graduate certificate in Community College Teaching and taught 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade English at all levels (standard, honors, and gifted). In each level, I coached students on how to achieve their goals by developing clear action plans. I specialize in helping students with application management, writing skills (college essays, applications, and in-school essays), reading comprehension, resume writing, and study skills.

Tutoring should be adaptable to meet students where they are and that means building their confidence to achieve their goals. Students that have worked with me have gone on to their top schools.

Included in the hourly rate is extensive prep time, access to resources that I have curated just for you, and a breakdown of each session.

I look forward to starting this writing journey with you!

College Counseling

College Counseling

As a high school teacher who has worked with students from grades 9-12, I have had many students come to me for help about their future goals. I have helped them refine essays and look at being well-rounded so as to be more noticeable by colleges. I also worked at the Writing Center at University of Central Florida where students who are coming into college for the first time, as well as applying for jobs and graduate schools, come for advice on what the college, or job, is looking for. In addition, I teach first year composition and see freshman colleges students right as they enter college and work with colleagues all across the university to hear about what the college is looking for. From these experiences, I have helped various students: find the right college to apply to, get their SAT/ACT/GRE scores where they need to be, and write hard hitting college application essays to put their best foot forward. I have found that with my previous work, as well as being accepted into 6 colleges and 3 graduate schools myself, I understand where colleges are coming from as they look for the right student for their school.
Common Core

Common Core

My Bachelor of Science degree in English Education required the study of standards as well as how to reach the complexity of those standards with students. I have used a standards based methodology in my classroom for many years now so I am very familiar with the terminology and accessibility of the standards.
English

English

I received my Bachelor's degree in English Education with a minor in Writing and Rhetoric. I also have an TESOL endorsement and Gifted Endorsement that pairs with my Florida Teaching certificate and received my Master's in English with a specification in Writing in Rhetoric. Using these degrees and certifications, I have taught English to 9th-12th grades and college freshmen since 2014. In addition, I also help with resume building, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and TOEFL tests. I am also a professor of writing skills at a law school and use this experience to show how students can adapt their writing and language to different audiences.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

Along with my background in English Education and my M.A. in Writing and Rhetoric, I have taught English to 9th-12th grade in the last five years. In those years, I taught SAT Prep for the Writing and Reading sections to my students as a class and on an individual basis after school. Using my experience with curriculum development, I designed 4 SAT workshops to use as a starting point for individual tutoring. These workshops include all sections of the SAT (reading, writing, math, essay). In these large group sessions, I give an overview, tips, strategies, and interactive practice to students. Many students who follow my program have increased their scores by 100 points after 5-10 hours of practice. I have had many one-on-one tutoring sessions outside of school for the SAT as well as large group sessions for The Greatest Investment and local high schools. I have also designed an ACT workshop as well and helped various students with other test breakdowns (GRE, Architect Exams, FSA, etc).

Special Needs

Special Needs

I have a gifted endorsement and a TESOL endorsement and am a certified English teacher in Florida which all require me to understand how to help students that fall under the ESE category (IEP, EP, twice exceptional, and 504 included). I have worked with all students to differentiate lessons to their needs in order to help them succeed.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I am a very organized person myself and I help my students do the same. I have worked with the AVID program in two separate schools and have seen how they help students improve their study skills. I have taught students how to use Cornell notes, organize by subject and priority, as well as understand time constraints. Lastly, as a graduate student, I must apply my own study skills consistently; such as reading with purpose, annotating, prioritizing, organizing, and being efficient and effective in my work schedule.
Writing

Writing

I received my Bachelor's degree in English Education with a minor in Writing and Rhetoric. I also have an ESOL endorsement that pairs with my Florida Teaching certificate and received my Master's in Writing in Rhetoric in 2017. Along with this background in English Education, I taught English Language Arts to 9th-12th grade students from 2013-2019. I spent one year working in the University Writing Center tutoring students about writing in all different fields of study before progressing to teach Freshman Composition at the university level. I continue to teach Composition at the university and help students with college essays and other writing during tutoring hours. I have also added Professor of Writing Skills at a local law university, where I help students write to specific audiences and make sure that their grammar skills are exemplary for their reports. I like to help students with all kinds of writing: copy editing, proofreading, grammar lessons, resume building, creative writing, argumentative writing, informative writing, legal writing, rhetorical analysis, brainstorming, outlining, drafting, revising, etc.

Not only did my son benefit from her expertise, but I also picked up some valuable tips for handling my own writing tasks more efficiently. Julie’s help was truly invaluable!

Super helpful with college essay

Julie has been incredibly helpful to my daughter, who needed help on one final college essay. She helped elicit personal details from daughter about experiences that were relevant to the prompt to make the essay her own. She then helped her structure the information into a proper essay format, creating a finished piece that is authentic vs. generic. My daughter really enjoys working with Julie as well and feels confident and stress-free now about the finished work.
