I have been engaged in helping others for as long as I can remember. I am a certified English Teacher with an ESOL accreditation and have worked tutoring students in a variety of venues. I have many highly qualified evaluations under my belt and am always working to improve my professional talents. I received my MA in Writing and Rhetoric in order to further my knowledge and help students on a deeper level. At the same time I gained a graduate certificate in Community College Teaching for adult learners. I taught First Year Composition at the local university for a year before taking a position teaching 9th grade students (PreAP/gifted and Honors students) for 3 years. I became the 9th grade team leader as well as presented workshops for my colleagues on helping engage students more effectively. In an effort to always be improving, I now have my gifted endorsement and am certified as an online instructor. I am also working toward a Ph.D. in Texts and Technology. I currently teach at the local university full time and have a flexible schedule for outside tutoring sessions.

I have multiple ways to help students depending on how they learn best. I have high standards for my students and push them to achieve at their very best. My goal is to help students have the confidence to achieve their goals and see the results of that confidence as grades/test scores improve.

I specialize in helping students in SAT (writing and reading), English literature, English Grammar, FSA Prep, and writing skills (such as in college essays and applications). I have tutored SAT with both my classroom of students as a group and on an individual basis in tutoring. Due to my ESOL accreditation, I have also helped many students learn English conversational skills. I have helped students understand the workings of grammar and worked through the intricacies of high level literature. I taught 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade English Honors as well as First Year Composition students. I have found that having students use problem-solving strategies is a very useful way to challenge them at a level that is comfortable. I use this in most every session and guide the students to figure out the answer to a problem. This in turn builds confidence so that students have the ability to continue growing after our sessions are complete.

Included in the hourly service charge is extensive prep time (roughly 1 hour of prep for every hour of meeting time), access to your own Google folder with resources and extra help that I have curated just for you, and a thorough multi-part breakdown of every session which I will send to you directly and post to your Google folder. If we are meeting face to face, the charge also includes travel to your home which is why there is a change in price.

I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy but will try to reschedule sessions.

I look forward to starting this journey toward academic success with you!

My Bachelor of Science degree in English Education required the study of standards as well as how to reach the complexity of those standards with students. I have used a standards based methodology in my classroom for many years now so I am very familiar with the terminology and accessibility of the standards.

I am a very organized person myself and I help my students do the same. I have worked with the AVID program in two separate schools and have seen how they help students improve their study skills. I have taught students how to use Cornell notes, organize by subject and priority, as well as understand time constraints. Lastly, as a graduate student, I must apply my own study skills consistently; such as reading with purpose, annotating, prioritizing, organizing, and being efficient and effective in my work schedule.

As a high school teacher who has worked with students from grades 10-12, I have had many students come to me for help about their future goals. I have helped them refine essays and look at being well-rounded so as to be more noticeable by colleges. I also worked at the Writing Center at University of Central Florida where students who are coming into college for the first time, as well as applying for jobs and graduate schools, come for advice on what the college, or job, is looking for. I have found that with my previous work, as well as being accepted into 6 colleges and 3 graduate schools myself, I understand where colleges are coming from as they look for the right student for their school.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Julie is the best tutor. My son had been struggling with his writing until he started working with Julie. In a short time he went from a C to a B, and now he is getting closer to an A. Julie is very knowledgeable and patient. I am grateful of how much she has helped him build his confidence in writing. I totally recommend her!

Fantastic tutor

Julie is a fantastic tutor with a lot of patience. She is helping my daughter who is in 9th grade dramatically improve her reading and writing skills. Julie is reliable and she goes above and beyond with her efforts to help my daughter. I would strongly recommend her for anyone. She prepares the lesson days prior to the class with a well-planned schedule and uses user friendly tools making it easy to communicate. My daughter seems to be gaining more confidence with Julie’s tutoring.

Great strategies and techniques

Ms. K. really helped my daughter identify the areas she was struggling in and created a plan of attack just in the first session. She helped my daughter tremendously improve those areas in ways that worked for her. Ms. K. is very well versed in the strategies and techniques that she teaches and has helped my daughter improve her score a lot. I would definitely recommend Ms. K. as an exceptional English teacher.
